Irish singer Sinéad O’Connor passes away at age 56

The Irish singer-songwriter Sinéad O’Connor, whose cover of Prince’s “Nothing Compares 2 U” became one of the decade’s biggest singles, passed away at the age of 56, it was revealed yesterday.

She was “our beloved Sinéad,” her family wrote in a letter to The Irish Times. “It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Sinéad.” Her family and friends are inconsolable and have asked for privacy during this extremely trying time.

O’Connor’s music won praise from critics and brought her fame around the world, but she also battled mental health problems and was involved in various disputes because of her strong political and social opinions.

O’Connor, who was born on December 8th, 1966, in Dublin, experienced a traumatic childhood and claims that her mother physically abused her. This led to a lifelong advocacy for abused children and a terrible childhood for O’Connor. When she was 15, she was sent to an asylum due to truancy and shoplifting concerns. There, she found her musical talent.

Because of her distinctive shaven head, which she claimed was a statement against conventional perceptions of women, O’Connor attained international popularity. She was also praised for her expressive and distinctive voice.

Despite continuing to release well-received albums, O’Connor’s international notoriety was affected by a number of issues. The most notorious was when she sang Bob Marley’s “War” on Saturday Night Live in 1992 and tore up a picture of Pope John Paul II while encouraging the crowd to “fight the real enemy.”

After Shane’s passing, O’Connor was heartbroken and even tweeted about the sorrow prior to this week’s tragedy.

She added on July 17 in the tearful post, “Been living as undead night creature since,” He was my soul’s light and the love of my life. We were two parts of one soul. The only person who has ever shown me absolute affection is him.

O’Connor released 10 albums between 1987 and 2014

With that, she declared, “I am lost in the bardo without him.”

O’Connor lost her 17-year-old son Shane last year when he committed suicide. Following the passing of her son, O’Connor announced she would never perform again, postponing a tour and her impending record. “There will never be anything to sing about again,” she declared.

After Shane’s passing, O’Connor was heartbroken and even tweeted about the sorrow prior to this week’s tragedy.

The late Irish artist shared 10 crying expressions with the hashtag “lostmy17yrOldSonToSuicidein2022” last week in response to a tweet from the Inspirational Quotes account asking: “Tell me how your life is going using emojis.”
