According to her family, actress Dame Maggie Smith, who was most recognised for her roles as Violet Crawley, the Dowager Countess of Grantham in Downton Abbey, and Professor McGonagall in the Harry Potter series, passed suddenly at the age of 89.

It is with great sadness that we have to announce the death of Dame Maggie Smith, according to a joint statement published by her sons Toby Stephens and Chris Larkin.

The statement continued, “She died quietly this morning, Friday, September 27, in the hospital. A deeply private individual, she passed away surrounded by loved ones.

She leaves behind two sons and five devoted grandkids who are inconsolable over the passing of their remarkable grandma and mother. “We would like to take this opportunity to thank the wonderful staff at the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital for their care and unstinting kindness during her final days,” the statement said, expressing gratitude for the institution and its personnel.

“We thank you for all your kind messages and support and ask that you respect our privacy at this time,” the family said as they concluded their statement.

Undoubtedly, the news of her passing is shocking. The Wimbledon men’s singles final was the last time the actress was spotted in public last year. For the event, the actress had dressed elegantly.

She was dressed in a navy blue shirtdress with a stylish dot pattern on it. She accessorised the ensemble with a blue jacket and black leather heels. She wore a navy leather bag that matched on one shoulder. Her bob hairstyle was styled in gentle waves. Her appearance was completed with a pink lipstick!
