Due to health concerns, Johnny Mathis has announced his retirement

At the age of 89, beloved music icon Johnny Mathis has made the decision to retire from performing. Because of health issues, particularly age-related memory loss, he is retiring. His Voice of Romance tour will go on as scheduled until this spring, even though he is retired. On May 18, the Bergen Performing Arts Center in Englewood, New Jersey, will host his farewell show.

Unfortunately, Mathis’s staff has verified that all shows scheduled after June 2025 have been canceled, which is bad news for anyone wanting to see him live after this spring. As many of you are aware, Johnny Mathis is getting close to turning ninety. We regret to inform you that he is retiring from touring and live performances due to his advanced age and growing memory issues,” his staff said.

Mathis was born in Gilmer, Texas, on September 30, 1935, and grew up in San Francisco, California. He became one of America’s most beloved musicians after winning hearts with his sultry, seductive ballads. Mathis, who has always been interested in music, started out in classical music before going into professional singing at the age of 13.

Mathis had the chance to interact with well-known jazz performers of the day while growing up in San Francisco, including the renowned Duke Ellington. Mathis admired Ellington’s intelligence and sophistication and held him in great regard. Mathis once said, “Ellington was one of my heroes because of his intelligence. His music sounded just as good as he looked, and he was a cultured man without being haughty or conceited.

Mathis made his imprint on pop music history in 1957 with the release of two significant successes, Chances Are and It’s Not for Me to Say. His album Johnny’s Greatest Hits was also released that year, and it spent an incredible 490 weeks at the top of the Billboard charts. A thriving career began during this extraordinary time.

Throughout his career, Mathis released more than 70 albums and sold over 350 million copies worldwide, making outstanding contributions to the music industry. His well-known songs, such as Wonderful! Wonderful! and The Twelfth of Never, as well as his joyous holiday albums, will always evoke sentiments of love and longing. Mathis was lovingly referred to as “The Voice of Romance” because of his soft and calming voice.
