The Brave Man Who Stopped a Gunman at Bondi Beach Is Facing a Tough Recovery
Ahmed al-Ahmed became an instant hero around the world for what he did during that awful attack at Bondi Beach. But his act of courage didn’t come without a heavy price. Now, his lawyer has given an update on how he’s doing, and it’s really hard to hear.
Ahmed al-Ahmed is a 43-year-old dad of two, originally from Syria, who runs a tobacconist shop. People everywhere have praised him for his incredible bravery in the terrifying shooting at a Hanukkah event near Bondi Beach in Sydney on December 14.

He Rushed Straight at the Shooter
As two gunmen started firing into the crowd, Ahmed didn’t hesitate—he charged one of them, tackled him, and managed to wrestle the weapon away. It’s believed his quick thinking saved many lives.
His cousin, Jozay Alkanj, shared with The Sydney Morning Herald that before running in, Ahmed told him: “I’m going to die—please look after my family and tell them I gave my life trying to save others.”
The video of the moment spread quickly online, but Ahmed got shot twice while stopping the attacker.
He’s been in intensive care ever since.

Struggling with Serious Injuries
His lawyer, Sam Issa, first told the Daily Mail that Ahmed had lost feeling in one arm.
Then, in a more recent chat with the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, Issa gave another tough update about the father of two.
On December 18, he said Ahmed had just come out of a complicated surgery dealing with nerve damage and was in a great deal of pain.
He’s lined up for another long operation—an eight-hour one—the next day.
From his hospital bed earlier this week, Ahmed shared a message in Arabic, thanking everyone for their support and prayers. He translated it roughly as: “I thank you all for your efforts. May God bless you and keep you well. Inshallah, we’ll come back stronger. Thanks again.” He also had words for his mom: “I’ve been through something so hard, only God knows… Please pray for me, Mom—you’re everything to me.”
High-profile visitors have come to see him, like Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, who said: “You’re so strong. Your heart and your courage inspire us all.”
New South Wales Premier Chris Minns added: “I’ve never seen anything like it—a guy walking right up to an armed gunman who’d just shot at people, disarming him alone, risking everything to protect others. He’s a true hero. No question, lives were saved because of him.”
An Outpouring of Support
The viral clip of Ahmed’s bravery sparked a fundraiser that’s now topped $2.5 million, with donations pouring in from over 42,000 people.
The attack claimed 15 lives, including one of the shooters, 50-year-old Sajid Akram. It’s being called Australia’s deadliest since Port Arthur in 1996, and the country is still grieving.
The surviving suspect, 24-year-old Naveed Akram, has been hit with 59 charges, among them 15 murders and terrorism-related offenses.
It’s a reminder of how one person’s selfless act can shine through even the darkest moments. Wishing Ahmed a full recovery—he deserves it.
