Bonnie Tyler Dies at 75: Total Eclipse of the Heart Singer Passes Away After Illness

Bonnie Tyler has died at the age of 75. The Welsh singer, whose unmistakable raspy voice made her one of the most distinctive artists of her era, passed away unexpectedly in a hospital in Portugal.

She had been receiving treatment for a serious illness that began with emergency surgery earlier this year. Born Gaynor Hopkins in Skewen, south Wales, Tyler broke through in the late 1970s with songs like It’s a Heartache before scoring a global smash in 1983 with Total Eclipse of the Heart.

That powerful ballad, along with later hits such as Holding Out for a Hero, turned her into a household name. She earned three Grammy nominations and represented the UK at Eurovision in 2013.

Her health declined sharply in May when she underwent emergency intestinal surgery in Faro, the Portuguese city where she lived. Doctors placed her in an induced coma to aid recovery. She woke from the coma in June but remained very unwell and in intensive care. While there had been some hope of improvement, her condition deteriorated in the days that followed.

On Thursday morning her family and team posted a statement on her official website. They said they were heartbroken to announce that Bonnie had passed away the previous night in hospital as a result of the illness she was being treated for. The message asked for privacy while the family deals with their grief and promised a further statement soon.

Fans across the world are now sharing memories of a singer whose voice became the soundtrack to countless lives and whose performances left a lasting impression on generations of listeners.
