Michael J. Fox Says Return to Acting Has Prolonged His Life Amid Parkinson’s

Michael J. Fox is opening up about how coming back to acting after years away has done more for him than he ever expected. The Back to the Future star, now 65, stepped away from the screen in 2020 because Parkinson’s disease had made it too hard to count on his speech from one day to the next. He figured that break would be permanent. Instead, he returned for a role on the Apple TV+ series Shrinking and discovered something surprising.

In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Fox said the decision to act again has “really prolonged my life and made my life interesting in a way that I didn’t think it would be to this point.” He is clear he is not fully retired. “I’m not retired from acting,” he explained, “but if I didn’t act again, it would be for a very good reason. I let Parkinson’s make decisions for me.”

Fox was diagnosed with early-onset Parkinson’s in 1991 when he was just 29. Doctors at the time told him he would probably only have about another decade of acting left in him. He kept the news private for years, continuing to work on shows like Family Ties and Spin City before going public in 1998. Over time he learned to stop hiding the physical realities of the disease and began using them in his performances, finding a kind of honesty that felt freer than trying to conceal everything.

His appearance on Shrinking, where he plays a character living with Parkinson’s who connects with Harrison Ford’s similarly diagnosed doctor, marked the first time he shared the screen with another actor dealing with the same condition in the story.

The experience earned him an Emmy nomination and reminded him how much the work still means. He is already preparing to return for the show’s fourth season, more than 25 years past the timeline doctors once predicted for his career.

Fox has long turned his diagnosis into purpose through the Michael J. Fox Foundation, but this latest chapter shows that creative work itself has become another way he keeps moving forward.
