Jill Biden Reveals Fear of Losing Husband Joe After Prostate Cancer Diagnosis

Dr. Jill Biden has opened up about the quiet fear that has settled over her and former President Joe Biden since his cancer diagnosis. Speaking on the Jaime Kern Lima Show, the former first lady admitted the weight of what they are facing together. Of course I’m scared, she said.

He’s almost ten years older than I am, and with an illness like this you kind of can’t let your head go there. It’s like you can’t imagine life without them. But you know they’re going to die just like I know I’m going to die. So part of it you accept.

Joe was diagnosed in May 2025 with an aggressive form of prostate cancer that had already spread to his bones. Jill described her husband as strong and resilient through it all. He hasn’t talked about any fear of his own, and she never expected him to. He’s always been the strength of our family, she said.

Rather than dwelling on the hardship, the couple has chosen a different approach. We can’t look at life that way, Jill explained. We look at it like Joe has cancer. He’s gonna die, so let’s make the most of every moment. Let’s be together. Let’s find things that bring us joy. Let’s make this a positive journey, not a negative one, because how can you live with that every day? You can’t. It’s too heavy.

The comments come roughly a year after the public announcement of Joe’s diagnosis. Earlier this summer on the Today show, Jill had said he was doing okay, though the fact that the cancer reached his bones makes everything different. She believes he will live with cancer for the rest of his life. Even so, the pair continue focusing on the time they still have and the small moments of joy they can create together.
