Trump Demands New Mexico Become ‘New America’ and Claims Home Values Will Soar

President Donald Trump is pushing New Mexico to change its name to New America once again. He says the switch would raise home values, boost incomes, and make people prouder when they salute the flag.

Trump took to Truth Social with a direct message. “New Mexico should immediately change its name to New America. We are not Mexico, we are the United States of America!” he wrote. He added that the new name “would add great value and prestige to the State! Home Values and Incomes would rise, and you would be even prouder while saluting our beautiful American Flag!”

He also took a shot at the state’s elections. “Maybe even the Crooked Elections, that New Mexico is known for, would become honest again!” Trump offered no proof for the election claim or any details on how a simple name change would lift property values or paychecks.

This is not a new idea. Last month he shared a map with “Mexico” crossed out in red and “America” written in its place. The White House shared that post on its official X account. He brought it up again on September 9 at the RNC Midterm Convention. “You have a neighboring state, New Mexico. We think it should be called New America,” he said. “I’ll tell you, the people love the idea. I don’t know about the radical left. I’m sure it doesn’t like it, but the people love it.”

New Mexico’s Democratic governor, Michelle Lujan Grisham, has already rejected the suggestion. She said the state’s name “isn’t up for debate — it’s been ours since before the United States existed.” She called the focus a distraction while her administration works on child care, education, health care, and housing. “While the White House wastes time coloring on maps, Nuevo México is busy doing the work,” she said last month.

Trump’s latest post does not explain any formal process for a name change. Article I of the New Mexico constitution states clearly, “The name of this state is New Mexico.” The idea also fits a pattern. Trump has already renamed Lake Ontario “Lake America” for federal use and the Gulf of Mexico the “Gulf of America.”
