Canada’s new Prime Minister offers a stern message to Donald Trump

Tensions between the United States and Canada are high, and they are becoming personal.
In a forceful and scorching remark, newly elected Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney took direct aim at President Donald Trump, escalating an already tense relationship between the two countries.

An unprecedented comeback.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has officially won the Canadian legislative election. Carney, a career banker with no political experience, became the Liberal Party’s leader earlier this year.

His party will now form Canada’s next government, marking a historic turnaround for a party that appeared to be on the verge of collapse just a few months ago.

Supporters erupted in cheers in a full Ottawa sports stadium where the Liberals conducted their election night celebration shortly after 10:00 p.m. EST, when Canada’s national network CBC projected a Carney victory.
In his inaugural address to the nation, the 60-year-old Liberal leader didn’t mince words, warning Canadians about a changing global landscape and increased pressure from their powerful southern neighbour.

“Humility is also about recognising that one of the responsibilities of government is to prepare for the worst, not hope for the best,” according to Carney’s backers. “As I’ve been warning for months, America wants our land, our resources, our water, our country – never.”

“But these are not idle threats,” he added. “President Trump is attempting to break us so that America can own us; this will never, ever occur. But we must also accept the fact that our world has fundamentally changed.”

Not backing down.

The remark comes just weeks after Carney succeeded former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who stood down after more than a decade in power.
The rising tensions between Trump and Canada are increasingly impossible to ignore. It all began with his stunning proposal to make Canada the 51st state.

The US president went even farther, ridiculing Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, referring to him as the “Governor of Canada,” and stating that the US spends an astounding $200 billion every year to assist Canada.
The prolonged trade battle and tariff threats have fuelled growing hostility among Canadians towards their neighbour, and patriotism has risen across the country.
Many Canadians have cancelled trips to the United States, started boycotting American products, and voted earlier than usual. A record 7.3 million Canadians voted before election day.

And Mark Carney made it plain that he will not back down from Trump’s comments.

“We are past the shock of the American betrayal,” he stated, “but we must never forget the lessons. We must look out for ourselves and, most importantly, care for one another.”
Will call Trump.
He emphasised that any future meeting with Trump would be on equal footing.
“We fully understand that we have a plethora of alternatives to the United States to create prosperity for all Canadians, and when I sit down with President Trump, we will be talking about the future economic and security relationship between two sovereign nations.”
He also asked Canadians to band together during what he termed a national crisis.

“Now, in the midst of this catastrophe, we are buying Canadian. We’re discovering everything this country has to offer. We are assisting our friends and neighbours in President Trump’s crosshairs during a situation that we did not cause.”
