During Rory McIlroy’s Masters victory, his wife seems “subdued,” and his ex shares an awkward message
In what appeared to be an emotional moment following the golfer’s celebration of his Masters victory on Sunday, Rory McIlroy’s wife, Erica Stoll, looked “subdued.” A body language specialist who watched the encounter told Page Six that Stoll was “more polite and restrained” when she hugged and sobbed with her husband.
Judi James told the Daily Mail on April 14 that “Erica uses back pats, which are first and foremost a gesture of gentle affection but also typically signal a desire to break from an embrace, while Rory appears much more clingy.” She remarked, “Erica’s response seems a little more polite, subdued, and tempered, while Rory looks overwhelmed and clingy.”

Amanda Balionis, a CBS Sports reporter who was said to have dated McIlroy after he filed for divorce from Stoll in 2024, publicly praised the Northern Irish golfer after interviewing him on social media at the same moment. This may have contributed to Stoll’s “more polite” manner.
“It took 17 Masters appearances, 11 years chasing the career Grand Slam, and a final round 73 this week — but Rory McIlroy has earned his Green Jacket and cemented his legacy alongside greats like Tiger, Jack, Gary, Hogan, and Sarazen,” said Balionis, who posted a picture of their interview with the remark. “What a week, and what a fight to the end.” Her post attracted a lot of attention right after, with several commenters pointing out how “awkward” the interview must have been considering the chemistry between the three people.
According to Stoll’s restrained manner, she might still be coming to terms with McIlroy’s choice to file for divorce in May 2024 and temporarily move on. Around the same time, rumors connected McIlroy to CBS reporter Amanda Balionis, although neither officially addressed the claims, and court records characterized the marriage as “irretrievably broken.”
In Palm Beach County, Florida, where he and Stoll live, McIlroy filed a notice of voluntary dismissal, ending the divorce a month later. He acknowledged the continued focus on his personal life in a recent statement, but he chose not to address the rumors directly.
The pair has maintained a low profile ever since. They have a 4-year-old daughter named Poppy. But last week, at the opening rounds of the Masters, they were seen sharing a sweet moment.
