Here’s why Donald Trump was not invited to the Met Gala

He had previously gone to the gala and even proposed while traveling there. Unfortunately, Donald Trump was not invited to the Met Gala this year and apparently hasn’t gone in a while. The biggest personalities in Hollywood and fashion come together on the Met Gala red carpet in New York City every year on the first Monday in May.

However, one of the most well-known people on the planet was not on this year’s guest list, even though the event claims to be among the most renowned of its sort in the world: Donald Trump, President.

You don’t need to search very far to see why Trump wasn’t accepted. A few years ago, Anna Wintour, the editor-in-chief of Vogue, who has been the chair or co-chair of the Met Gala every year since 1997, declared that the two-time president of the United States would never go to another gala. In 2017, she declared on The Late Late Show with James Corden that “he will never be invited again.”

She reportedly made the choice soon after Trump took office for the first time, and the decision remains in effect today, as his second term has begun.

It’s possible that readers are aware of Trump’s complex past with the Met Gala. In the 1980s and 1990s, he frequently went with his ex-wives, Marla Maples and Ivana Trump.

On his way to the event in 2004, he then proposed to Melania Trump, a gesture that attracted a lot of attention from the American tabloid press. However, the gala’s character and its connection to politics have evolved over time.

Wintour has made it clear that the purpose of the event is “beauty, creativity, and reflecting history,” not politics. However, in reality, it seems that certain ideals are given more weight than others when choosing the guests for the gala.

Furthermore, it seems like Trump is not the only individual who has been prohibited from going to the event. The New York Times reports that a number of the president’s prominent supporters were conspicuously absent from this year’s gala. This includes Mark Zuckerberg, the creator of Meta, Jeff Bezos, the CEO of Amazon, and Elon Musk, who has already visited frequently.

With an emphasis on black designers and how black men and women have utilized fashion to defy stereotypes, this year’s theme—Superfine: Tailoring Black Style—was perhaps unsurprisingly politically heated. Cultural analyst Louis Piscano claims that the motif “sends a clear message.”
