Legendary actress dies in an ‘unexpected accident’ while walking near her home in Washington

Her obituary said, “We hope her immense positive energy flows out to those who had the pleasure of knowing her. She was a powerhouse in life.” Whitfield was raised in a home that valued creativity, so it wasn’t surprising that she became interested in the arts. Her father was a music director at the University of Mississippi, while her mother taught speech and theatre.
She started working regularly in radio advertisements and television productions like Our Miss Brooks and One Man’s Family at the age of seven, which helped pave the way for her lucrative career in entertainment that went beyond the big screen.
Whitfield’s legendary performance in White Christmas served as her big break and cemented her place in cinematic history. In the 1950s and 1960s, she maintained her success in films and television.
She starred in films including Juvenile Jungle and Tick, Tick, Tick, and appeared in a number of TV shows, such as Father Knows Best, The Donna Reed Show, Rawhide, and Perry Mason. In addition, she played a noteworthy recurring part on Days of Our Lives.
Whitfield earned a degree in communications and worked with the Washington State Department of Ecology before deciding she needed a break from films and television. She later became an advocate for women’s rights, the environment, and voter registration.

Whitfield leaves behind three children and seven grandchildren, all of whom recall her as a kind, strong, and giving woman.
