Leaving a phone charger plugged into the wall when nothing is attached to it feels like the most ordinary thing

Leaving a phone charger plugged into the wall when nothing is attached to it feels like the most ordinary thing in the world. Most of us do it without a second thought. The little brick just sits there looking completely inactive, so why bother pulling it out every time?

It turns out that quiet little habit is not quite as harmless as it seems. Chargers that stay connected keep drawing a small amount of power even when they are not charging anything. People call this standby power or phantom load, and while a single charger uses only a tiny amount, the total across every phone, tablet, laptop and gadget charger in a typical home adds up over months and years.

That constant trickle of electricity is only the beginning. Because current is still flowing through the internal circuits, the charger can slowly build up heat. Cheap or counterfeit models are especially prone to this. Their components are not built to the same standards, so overheating becomes more likely. In the worst cases that heat can melt plastic, create sparks or even start a fire, particularly in older homes or on overloaded outlets.

The same continuous electrical stress also wears the charger itself out faster. Capacitors and other small parts inside degrade when they stay energized day after day. Over time you may notice slower charging, more heat during normal use, or the charger simply giving up altogether long before it should have.

There is an environmental side to this as well. Every bit of electricity that gets used has to be generated somewhere, and a large share of that still comes from fossil fuels. When millions of people leave chargers plugged in around the clock, the collective waste contributes to higher energy demand and the carbon emissions that go with it.

On the money side the effect is small for one charger, yet it stacks with every other idle device in the house. Televisions, game consoles, computers and kitchen gadgets all add their own standby loads. Unplugging the chargers you are not using is one of the easiest ways to trim that quiet drain on the monthly bill.

A few modern chargers even include smart features or data connections. Leaving those powered up all the time can open a tiny extra window for security problems, though the risk is generally low. Still, the simplest protection is to disconnect anything you are not actively using.

The fix requires almost no effort. Pull the charger out of the wall when you finish charging. Choose well-made, certified chargers instead of the cheapest ones on the market. Give the cables and plugs a quick look now and then for damage. Avoid packing too many plugs into one outlet. These small habits cut the wasted power, lower the chance of overheating, and help the charger last longer.

In the end the charger is such a small part of daily life that it is easy to ignore. Yet taking ten seconds to unplug it when it is not needed is a quiet way to make your home a little safer, a little more efficient, and a little kinder to both your wallet and the planet.

Captain Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger, the pilot who safely landed a stricken airliner on the Hudson River and saved every person

Captain Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger, the pilot who safely landed a stricken airliner on the Hudson River and saved every person on board, has revealed that he is living with an early stage Alzheimer’s diagnosis. The 75 year old aviator received the news last August after he began noticing small changes in his normally sharp memory. Names sometimes came slower than before and stories he had just shared would slip away. He describes this as the start of a long journey rather than an ending.

Sully has spent decades in service, first as a fighter pilot in the Air Force, then as a commercial airline captain, accident investigator and later as the U.S. Ambassador to the International Civil Aviation Organization.

Courtesy Sullenberger family

After the 2009 emergency landing that made him known around the world, he used that platform to push for better pilot training, rest rules and safety standards. Now he sees speaking openly about his diagnosis as another way to serve, especially for the millions of families who live with this disease every day.

His wife Lorrie says the man she has known for 37 years remains the same steady person who stayed calm in the cockpit that January day. The couple, along with their two daughters and granddaughter, are choosing to focus on hope and the ordinary moments that still bring joy. They are walking this path together and want others facing similar news to know they do not have to stay in the shadows.

Courtesy Sullenberger family

First Officer Jeff Skiles, who was in the right seat during that flight, learned of the diagnosis months ago. He told People that a conversation with Sully gives no sign anything has changed. Skiles hopes the condition moves slowly and that his friend can keep building the kind of life he has always valued.

Sully believes sharing his experience can encourage other families. He has often said the wave of hope that followed the Hudson landing lifted many people, and he thinks a little of that same hope is needed now. In September he will be inducted into the National Aviation Hall of Fame, an honor that recognizes his lifetime of contributions to aviation. While the disease may affect how clearly he recalls the past, he is determined it will not stop him from looking forward with appreciation for the future and gratitude for the family beside him.

Nearly twenty years after Bernadette Vander Meer fell more than 1,200 feet to her death from Angels Landing in Zion

Nearly twenty years after Bernadette Vander Meer fell more than 1,200 feet to her death from Angels Landing in Zion National Park, her husband David was arrested and charged with pushing her off that cliff. What had long been treated as a tragic accident during the couple’s tenth-anniversary hike was suddenly ruled a murder. David, a former youth pastor from Las Vegas, was taken into custody in June 2026. Just days later he was found with self-inflicted wounds in his jail cell and died the following day.

Bernadette was only 29 when she died on that August day in 2006. Friends and family packed a memorial service for her less than a week later, with more than 600 people coming to say goodbye. Among them was Kathy Page, a former youth leader at their church who had known Bernadette since she was a young teenager.

Courtesy Laura GudenKauf

Page had met Bernadette for lunch about a month before the fatal trip. During that conversation she told her friend she suspected David was having an affair. Bernadette seemed to be holding something back, but Page didn’t push for details. What she saw at the memorial service stunned her. The same woman she believed was David’s mistress was sitting right near him on the same bench or just behind him. Page couldn’t believe it.

“I can’t remember the connection, the bridge from her saying that David was having an affair to me learning the person’s name and how did I know that was her sitting next to him,” Page later recalled. “But I knew who it was.”

Page is married to a police officer, so her instincts immediately went to the spouse. Still, she stayed quiet that day. She didn’t want to say something she might regret, and part of her wondered if David was simply hurting and needed support. What she noticed most, though, was how little anguish he showed while everyone around him sobbed. “I didn’t see the anguish,” she said. “I was in anguish at this funeral. We were sobbing. I didn’t see that with him.”

Courtesy Laura GudenKauf

Page spoke briefly with David before leaving the service. She saw him only once more in the years that followed, when he visited her church. Then one day in June 2026 the news broke that U.S. Marshals had arrested him in Las Vegas. He faced charges of murder and insurance fraud in Bernadette’s death. For Page it felt like justice for her old friend Bernie.

David was booked into the Clark County Detention Center but was soon discovered with self-inflicted wounds. He died the next day. Page admitted it was difficult to hear about his death so soon after the arrest, yet she also felt a measure of relief. “He’s not around to hurt anybody else anymore,” she said. “End of story. It can be all put to rest. I mean, it’s as close to a closure as you can get.”

She added that she thinks Bernadette would have forgiven him in the end, because that was simply the kind of person she was.

At 96, Lillian Droniak shows no signs of slowing down her social calendar, even when her retirement home pushes back.

At 96, Lillian Droniak shows no signs of slowing down her social calendar, even when her retirement home pushes back. The influencer known online as Grandma Droniak posted a video this month that spread quickly across TikTok and Instagram, in which she displays a formal warning letter she received about her gatherings.

The note cited repeated noise complaints from her room and made it clear that parties are not allowed and that serving alcohol to other residents raises safety issues. It referenced security footage showing people leaving her room after 1 in the morning on a Tuesday and warned that continued problems could bring restrictions on visitors along with a review of her status in the community.

Grandma Droniak/Instagram

The letter encouraged socializing through approved activities but asked her to keep future gatherings respectful of the rules and quiet hours.

Droniak appeared unfazed as she read the letter to the camera. She pointed out that she pays twelve thousand dollars a month for her residence and therefore plans to do what she wants, including inviting girlfriends over to drink and catch up. She described the evenings as getting rowdy at times but drew a distinction between that and actual parties. The day after sharing the warning she posted again, this time noting she was hungover from the previous night and declaring that her nursing home cannot stop her from partying through the last chapter of her life.

Her representative confirmed to People that the events took place as described. The matter has since been resolved, with the home allowing visitors in her room until late while prohibiting her from supplying alcoholic drinks.

Droniak moved into the retirement home roughly two years ago after a fall resulted in a broken leg and she decided she needed extra assistance. She has continued to share her experiences there with followers, including the party she threw for her 96th birthday in March. Her online presence dates back to at least 2019, and she has never disclosed the name of the facility, citing safety concerns.

A Michigan couple has been arrested and charged with murder after their 7-year-old son, who weighed 255 pounds, died from heart disease last year. Authorities say the boy’s death stemmed from years of severe neglect, including poor nutrition, lack of medical care, and living in terrible conditions.

On June 24, Jessica O’Brien, 41, and her husband Damien O’Brien, 40, from Flint Township, were taken into custody. They face second-degree murder charges, torture, and multiple counts of second-degree child abuse related to the death of their son, Casper O’Brien, in November 2025.

Casper O’Brien, 7.
Prosecutors allege that Casper had become immobile because his parents did not give him proper food, skipped necessary doctor visits despite having health insurance, failed to encourage any exercise, and kept him in an unsafe, filthy home. Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton described it as a heartbreaking case of willful neglect that caused the boy immense suffering.

“Their neglect led to their child suffering severe bed sores, various rashes and other physical health disorders including extreme morbid obesity that ultimately led to his early death,” Leyton said.

Casper reportedly lived mostly on potato chips and fries. He had autism, never attended school, and had only seen a doctor once in recent years. In early 2024, he visited his primary care physician and was referred to a specialist, but that appointment never happened. On the morning he passed away, his parents reportedly called their veterinarian about their dog instead of seeking immediate help for their son.

The tragedy unfolded just before 9 a.m. on November 4, 2025, when Jessica called 911 saying Casper wasn’t breathing. Paramedics tried to revive him and rushed him to the hospital, but he was pronounced dead. The medical examiner determined the cause was dilated cardiomyopathy, a serious heart condition, made worse by his extreme obesity.

When police and child protective services investigated the family’s rental home, they found it in appalling shape, filled with trash and filth. There was only one bathroom, and its toilet was broken and overflowing with waste. Casper shared a makeshift bed with his parents and his 5-year-old sister.

In his obituary, Casper was remembered fondly as a bright and loving boy whose joyful spirit touched everyone around him.

The O’Briens are being held in the Genesee County Jail without bond and are scheduled to appear in court again on July 2. Damien’s attorney said it’s too early to comment on the charges, as they have not yet received full details from prosecutors, and plans to defend the case in court rather than in the media.

This story is a painful reminder of how important it is to protect vulnerable children. If you suspect child abuse, you can reach out to the Childhelp National Child Abuse Hotline at 1-800-4-A-Child or visit childhelp.org for confidential support available 24/7.

A French woman who married a Pakistani man she met in Australia has been rescued after enduring 12 years of alleged abuse and captivity in a remote village back in his home country.

Sylvie Yasmina, now 54 years old, first crossed paths with her husband while living in Australia. The couple tied the knot there in 2003, and everything seemed like a fresh start. But in 2014, they decided to move the family to Pakistan, and that’s when her nightmare truly began.

French national Sylvie Yasmina, 54, (centre) has been rescued after she was held captive and beaten every day for 12 years by her migrant husband

According to what she told police, her husband kept her and their five children locked away in an extremely rundown room in the village of Bara. She described him as incredibly violent, saying he beat them almost every single day. The family lived in squalor with hardly any sunlight or basic comforts, completely cut off from the outside world.

The situation finally came to light thanks to one of their sons, who bravely slipped away and alerted the authorities. Police raided the property and found the mother and children covered in bruises, living in heartbreaking conditions.

A senior police officer shared details with local media, noting that the two older children had missed out on their education entirely, while the three younger ones, born in Pakistan, had never even been enrolled in school. The family had been deprived of any freedom or contact with others for over a decade.

In her statement to police, Sylvie wrote about the daily pressure and violence she and the kids faced. She felt her own future had been destroyed and feared the same for her children. Speaking to reporters afterward, she opened up about the incredibly tough times since arriving in Bara in 2014 and expressed deep thanks to the authorities who stepped in to save them.

The family has now been moved to a women’s shelter in Peshawar, with plans to return to France soon. Her husband has not been publicly named by officials. Stories like this remind us how isolating and dangerous controlling relationships can become, especially when families are far from support networks.

A 21-year-old woman lost her life in a devastating accident during a bungee jump in Brazil after staff reportedly failed to secure her safety cord.

Maria Eduarda Rodrigues de Freitas was enjoying what should have been an exciting adventure on Saturday, June 13, when tragedy struck at the Ponte do Esqueleto, also known as Skeleton Bridge, in Limeira, São Paulo.

Maria Eduarda Rodrigues de Freitas.
Credit: facebook

She had signed up for a guided rope jump from the old bridge as part of a tour. According to local reports, video footage shared on social media captured the heartbreaking moment when staff members carried her to the edge and launched her off while she wore just a helmet. No safety line was attached.

A witness who was filming the jump noticed the rope left behind on the ground right away and could be heard shouting in alarm, “Guys, the rope!” De Freitas fell roughly 131 feet, or about 40 meters. Emergency responders arrived by helicopter, but sadly she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Friends and family described her as a recent graduate in physical education and sports management. In a lighthearted post on her Instagram Stories just before the jump, she had joked about the thrill ahead, asking who would let her leap off a bridge like that. Her fiancé was overcome with grief when he reached the site and needed medical attention at a local emergency room. Her social media accounts were taken down afterward.

Authorities acted quickly in the aftermath. Six people connected to the operation were taken in for questioning, with three men ages 27, 32, and 42 arrested right at the bridge on charges of homicide with implied malice. A government representative confirmed the details to reporters.

Woman, 21, dies after staff allegedly forget to attach rope during bungee jump in Brazil. Credit: g1

One delegate investigating the case pointed out that the group running the jumps was not properly regulated and lacked official authorization to be there. “They ended up organizing this event, and this fatality happened today, in my perception, due to a failure to verify and supervise the placement of the rope on the victim’s jump,” the official said.

The defense for those involved claimed they had years of experience and that this was the first serious incident in a long time for their company. Meanwhile, the Limeira City Council is pushing for accountability, filing complaints against federal authorities for poor oversight of the risky area, which has been known for safety issues over the years.

Brazil’s Civil Police continue to investigate what went wrong, and the case has left many people questioning how such a basic safety step could have been overlooked in what was supposed to be a controlled thrill-seeking activity.

The heartbreaking news has come in about a young college student from Auburn University who went missing while on a family vacation in Japan. His mother has now confirmed that he has been found deceased.0

James “Weston” Higginbotham, a 20-year-old junior majoring in biosystems engineering, disappeared on May 29 during the trip with his family in the Kyoto area. He was last captured on CCTV leaving a train at Yamashina station.

James “Weston” Higginbotham.
On June 6, his mother Nancy Higginbotham shared the devastating update on Instagram and Facebook. She wrote that Weston was discovered by a volunteer search-and-rescue team in a mountainous area outside Kyoto.

“The grief we feel is impossible to put into words,” Nancy said alongside her husband Keith. “We are forever grateful for the time we had with our sweet, precious Weston, but cannot begin to understand what life without him will be like.”

She went on to thank everyone who had helped spread the word, offered prayers, and joined in the search efforts across the United States, Japan, and beyond. “The outpouring of kindness and support has carried us through the darkest days of our lives,” she added. The family is now asking for privacy as they try to cope with this unimaginable loss.

James ‘Weston’ Higginbotham’s parents, Nancy and Keith Higginbotham.
The Higginbothams had arrived in Japan on May 25 for what was meant to be a special family getaway. Things took a turn after an argument between Weston and his parents, which his mom later described as a silly disagreement over using ChatGPT to plan parts of their itinerary. Weston walked away afterward, and that was the last time they saw him.

As an experienced hiker, the family suspected he might have headed onto a trail from Yamashina. His phone showed its last activity that same evening. Despite challenges like a typhoon that hit the region, Nancy and Keith searched tirelessly with flashlights and headlamps, calling on others to help once the weather cleared. Japanese authorities reviewed extensive CCTV footage and deployed police, K9 units, and helicopters to comb the steep, wooded terrain.

Auburn University expressed its condolences, noting that their thoughts were with Weston, his family, and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time. The school respected the family’s privacy as the search continued.

This story touched so many people around the world who followed the updates and hoped for a safe return. Now, the focus shifts to supporting the Higginbotham family through their profound sorrow. Our hearts go out to them as they remember their beloved son.

The situation in Minneapolis has gotten really intense after the tragic shooting of Renee Nicole Good by ICE agent Jonathan

The situation in Minneapolis has gotten really intense after the tragic shooting of Renee Nicole Good by ICE agent Jonathan Ross on January 7. What started as a confrontation on a quiet residential street has now left the whole city on edge, with protests heating up and more questions coming up every day.

It all happened when Renee, who was driving her Honda Pilot, seemed to try pulling away as ICE officers told her to get out. Video from the scene shows some kind of contact between the agent and the car. Tragically, Ross ended up firing shots that hit Renee in the head, and she didn’t survive.

Renee Nicole Good. Credit: Facebook

Renee was a 37-year-old mom, poet, and writer—a U.S. citizen who had recently moved to Minneapolis with her family. People who knew her described her as incredibly kind, compassionate, and someone who always looked out for others.

Now, new details have come out from U.S. officials: during that same incident, Jonathan Ross himself got hurt pretty badly, suffering internal bleeding in his torso. The Department of Homeland Security has confirmed he was injured and taken to the hospital, though they haven’t said exactly how serious it was. He was released the same day, but it’s clear the encounter took a toll on him too.

The Trump administration is standing firm, saying Ross acted in self-defense to protect himself and others. Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche even told reporters there’s no reason for a criminal civil rights probe right now—the FBI is handling the investigation on its own, without state involvement.

In the wake of everything, support has poured in from both sides. A GoFundMe for Ross has pulled in more than $700,000, while one set up for Renee’s wife and young son has gone way over $1 million. There’s some question about whether Ross can actually take the money, since federal rules usually don’t allow government employees to get extra pay for their job.

Meanwhile, the streets of Minneapolis haven’t calmed down. Protests keep going, with federal agents sometimes clashing with people demonstrating against the heavy ICE enforcement. Things got even more tense this week when another federal officer shot someone in the leg during an arrest after being attacked, according to DHS.

Here are a few glimpses of the ongoing enforcement actions and the protests that have followed:

Minnesota officials are pleading for everyone to take a step back and cool things down. Assistant Attorney General Brian Carter said during a court hearing on the state’s challenge to the immigration crackdown, “What we need most right now is a pause. The temperature needs to be lowered.”

A federal judge has kept Renee’s case front and center, giving the Justice Department a short deadline to respond to calls for a restraining order. Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey has been outspoken, calling the operations discriminatory and saying agents are targeting people based on looks—especially Latino or Somali folks—and even pulling U.S. citizens off the streets.

As the investigation drags on, Minneapolis feels like a city holding its breath, caught between grief, anger, and fear over what comes next.

The tragic shooting of 37-year-old Renee Nicole Good in Minneapolis on January 7, 2026, has sparked intense debate across the country. Renee, a mother of three, poet, writer, and someone described by her family as full of kindness and sunshine, was fatally shot by an ICE agent during what federal officials describe as a confrontation amid an immigration enforcement operation.

According to reports, Renee was in her SUV on a residential street when agents approached. Video footage shows an officer trying to open her door, and as she began to drive away—after what some describe as conflicting instructions—the agent fired multiple shots through the windshield, killing her.

Members of law enforcement at the scene after the shooting by an ICE agent in south Minneapolis on January 7, 2026.
President Donald Trump quickly weighed in on Truth Social, calling the incident “horrible” to watch but placing blame on Renee. He described her as “disorderly, obstructing, and resisting,” claiming she “violently, wilfully, and viciously ran over the ICE Officer,” who he said acted in self-defense. Trump suggested the officer was lucky to be alive and recovering, while criticizing the “Radical Left” for targeting law enforcement. Many have pushed back against this account, with local leaders like Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey and Governor Tim Walz disputing the self-defense narrative and calling for accountability.

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem also defended the agent’s actions as justified, though she noted the tragedy was “preventable.”

Adding his voice to the conversation, ESPN commentator Stephen A. Smith shared a detailed take on his YouTube channel and podcast. He argued that, from a strictly legal standpoint, the ICE agent was “completely justified” and unlikely to face prosecution.

Smith explained that he reviewed the video multiple times and believed the situation—where Renee allegedly tried to drive off with officers in front and to the side—put the agent in fear for his safety, aligning with how law enforcement is trained to respond.

Renee Nicole Good, remembered by loved ones as a compassionate mother, poet, and wife.
At the same time, Smith didn’t hold back on the human side. He questioned why lethal force was necessary, suggesting alternatives like shooting the tires if the agent had time to step aside, or simply arresting her. “From a humanitarian perspective, why did you have to do that?” he said. “You didn’t have to kill her… It wasn’t necessary. You could have spared the woman’s life.”

Smith emphasized that Renee was wrong to disregard the officers and try to drive away, but stressed the outcome felt avoidable—especially since she wasn’t barreling toward anyone at high speed but was more or less parked in the street before moving.

This incident has left many grieving and angry, with vigils held in Minneapolis and beyond, and calls for a transparent investigation. It’s a heartbreaking reminder of how quickly things can escalate, and how divided opinions can become in moments like this. What do you think about Stephen A’s balanced take—legal justification versus the human cost?
