MAGA fans criticized Pope Leo XIV for being “woke

When Robert Francis Prevost, 69, was elected as the new Pope on Thursday evening local time, he was given the name Leo XIV, the first Leo in more than a century. While Catholics around the world rejoiced, some were not so thrilled, and MAGA supporters are now attacking Leo on social media.

The smoke on top of the Sistine Chapel was white just two days after the Catholic cardinals convened in Vatican City and positioned themselves in the building to choose a new pope. To the cheers of thousands assembled in St. Peter’s Square, American Robert Prevost made an appearance on the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica.

He adopted the name Leo XIV, which was chosen by 13 popes prior to him. A pope’s name signifies “a certain spirit and direction and vision of the new pope,” according to Dennis Doyle, a theologian and professor emeritus of religious studies at the University of Dayton, who spoke to CBS.

“The first thing you would search for would be which popes previously had that name,” he said. “That would indicate something about the pope’s desired course.”

According to Candida Moss, a CBS papal contributor, Pope Leo the Great is the origin of the name Leo. He notably met with Attila the Hun and persuaded him not to assault Rome during his tenure as pope, which lasted from 440 to 461.

Prevost has voiced his support for immigrants and George Floyd while publicly criticizing Vice President JD Vance. One Trump fan called Leo a “woke Marxcist Pope,” saying he is “worse than Francis,” according to Independent. “Sorry, Catholics,” wrote alt-right conspiracy theorist Mike Cernovich on X.

He also claimed that “we’re fcked,” referred to Leo as a “liberal piece of s*,” and added that “this guy is worse than Francis.” The election of Pope Leo XIV infuriated MAGA influencer Vince Langman, who brought up a 2015 tweet from Prevost in which he denounced Trump’s anti-immigrant remarks. “He is a WOKE.” Don’t be a Trumper liberal. The MAGA movement’s members expressed their distaste of Provost becoming Pope even prior to the election. “I do think one of the dark horses — and unfortunately one of the most progressive — is Cardinal Prevost,” former Trump senior strategist Steve Bannon said to Piers Morgan last week.
