Selena Gomez Faces Major Follower Drop After Controversial Post About Immigration

Selena Gomez has reportedly lost over 700,000 followers following a single post that she has since deleted. According to the social media analytics platform CritiqueJeu, the pop star’s online following has decreased by approximately 808,500 in the past 30 days.

CritiqueJeu co-founder Paul Lenglet shared with the Daily Mail that while Gomez enjoyed a successful end to 2024, the beginning of 2025 has been challenging for her. Last month, the ‘Calm Down’ singer shared a video expressing her distress over President Donald Trump’s recent executive orders, which are anticipated to lead to the deportation of millions.

In the video, Gomez voiced her concerns for those affected, stating, “I’m so sorry. All my people are getting attacked. The children, I don’t understand. I wish I could do something but I can’t. I don’t know what to do. I’ll try everything, I promise.” However, she deleted the video shortly after posting it, later sharing a message that read, “Apparently it’s not OK to show empathy for people.”

Since taking office, President Trump has implemented several controversial changes to U.S. immigration policy, including appointing former Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) chief Tom Homan as the new ‘border czar.’ Homan emphasized a crackdown on illegal immigration, stating, “If you’re in the country illegally, you’re on the table, because it’s not OK to, you know, violate the laws of this country.”

Trump’s administration has introduced what it calls the ‘largest deportation program in history,’ estimating that up to 20 million individuals could potentially be deported. While the administration has indicated that those with criminal records would be prioritized, all undocumented migrants remain at risk.

An insider revealed to the Daily Mail that Gomez deleted her emotional video due to concerns it might be perceived as a sign of ‘weakness’ and could alienate her Republican fans, particularly those connected to her beauty brand, Rare Beauty. The insider noted that Gomez is passionate about the issue but feels she can “never win” in the face of negative feedback. As a result, she plans to steer clear of political commentary moving forward.

Lenglet also highlighted that Gomez’s recent film, Emilia Pérez, has faced criticism, particularly from Mexican audiences, further complicating her public image. The film, which follows a Mexican lawyer assisting a notorious cartel boss in transitioning to a new life, has been met with backlash, adding to the fallout from her immigration video. Lenglet stated, “Gomez has been known for publicly speaking out, but this can alienate different segments of her fanbase—and potential Rare Beauty customers.”
