Trump Pulls the Plug on Kamala Harris’s Secret Service Detail Just Before Her Big Book Tour
You know, politics can get pretty petty sometimes, and this latest move from President Donald Trump feels like a prime example. He’s gone ahead and yanked former Vice President Kamala Harris’s Secret Service protection, and it’s set to end on September 1st. This comes right as she’s gearing up for a nationwide tour to promote her new memoir, 107 Days, kicking off on the 24th.
Word is, Trump sent a letter on August 28th straight to Harris and her crew, basically saying, “Hey, we’re done here.” The note, as reported by outlets like CNN, NBC News, and Axios, read something along the lines of: “You’re authorized to stop all those extra security measures for Former Vice President Kamala D. Harris, effective September 1, 2025—except what’s legally required.” Ouch.

Harris’s team didn’t waste time responding. One of her senior advisers put out a statement thanking the Secret Service folks for their top-notch work, calling them professional, dedicated, and rock-solid when it comes to keeping people safe. Fair enough—she’s got to be appreciative after all they’ve done.
Now, a bit of backstory here because this isn’t just random. Former presidents get lifetime Secret Service coverage, no questions asked. But for vice presidents? Congress tweaked the rules back in 2008, limiting it to six months post-term for them, their spouses, and any kids under 16. However, just before handing over the keys to the White House in January 2025, former President Joe Biden slipped in an executive memo that bumped Harris’s protection up to 18 months. Sneaky, but apparently legal.

With Trump’s reversal, things change fast. No more agents shadowing her every move, no deep dives into threats via emails, texts, or social media, and they’ll pull the plug on guarding her L.A. home too. Those federal pros will get reassigned elsewhere, per CNN’s reporting.
This didn’t sit well with some California bigwigs. Gavin Newsom’s spokesperson, Bob Salladay, shot back with a statement saying the safety of public officials shouldn’t be tossed around like some political football—calling it erratic and vindictive. And L.A. Mayor Karen Bass chimed in, flat-out saying Trump’s order puts Harris in real danger. She promised to team up with Newsom to keep things secure for her in the city.

It’s worth noting this isn’t Trump’s first rodeo with trimming Secret Service details. His admin has done similar moves before, like with Hunter Biden and a few others, but that’s a whole other can of worms.
All in all, it’s a tense time. Harris is stepping back into the spotlight with her book, reflecting on those whirlwind 107 days or whatever the title nods to, and now she’s doing it without the usual safety net. Politics, man—always full of surprises, and not always the good kind.
