The best dog you could ask for,’ a young child writes in a lovely note to his foster dog’s new owners.

It’s a wonderful thing to do to welcome a foster dog into your house. Fostering provides a safe haven for homeless pets away from shelters, where they can receive lots of love and socialisation while they search for a “forever home.”

While it can be a wonderful experience, it can be difficult for foster parents to say goodbye to their new friends after they have grown connected. But, in the end, you know they’re going to a good home and will always have a place in your heart.

That’s what one touching anecdote illustrates, in which a young child penned a nice note to his foster puppy’s new owners, hailing her as “the best dog.”

Maggie, a pit bull mix, was spotted as a stray and saved by North Shore Animal League America, a nonprofit rescue in Port Washington, New York, last year. She was too young to be adopted, so the group had to locate her a temporary home, according to People.

Maggie quickly found a wonderful foster family in Louisiana with the Duncan family. Everyone, notably their six-year-old son, Roman, fell in love with the puppy.

Maggie was not theirs to keep forever, and the family made it clear to young Roman that the puppy would eventually go to a new home once she was old enough.

While he was aware that his new buddy would soon go on, he built a close bond with her during the holidays, discovering how much the former stray enjoyed cuddling and playing fetch.

When it came time to say goodbye, Roman made sure Maggie’s new family knew how important she was by transporting her back to the North Shore Animal League to find her permanent home.

NSALA discovered Roman had sent along some charming hand-written messages and drawings addressed to Maggie’s future adopters when she returned to New York.

He praises Maggie the “greatest dog you could ever ask for” in the letters, noting all of her wonderful qualities, such as how she’s toilet trained and “loves other dogs” and “loves kids.”

Maggie likes cuddling and fetch, but most of all, she loves “to be loved,” as the 6-year-old tells the new family.

“That’s why she is the best dog ever,” Roman writes. “We love Maggie, I hope you do [too].”

The letters also contain drawings of the adorable puppy. Roman reportedly slipped the notes in, and they were a heartwarming surprise to managers at the North Shore Animal League once found.

Karla Agostinello, NSALA’s rescue team manager, told Today, “I was extremely touched.” “It’s difficult (for foster parents) to load the animals onto the truck.” So I get a lot of mail from adults, but not so much from kids. This is why it had such a strong emotional impact on me.
