Barbara Walters, a renowned and pioneering journalist, passed away at age 93
The legendary ABC News anchor’s demise on December 30 was confirmed by a number of publications.
When Walters became the first female news anchor on an evening programme in 1976, she cleared the door for women in journalism.
And in only three short years, Walters would go on to co-host 20/20 and be the one to introduce the enduring chat programme The View in 1997. Up until 2014, Walters served as one of the show’s co-hosts.
Walters continued to serve as the show’s executive producer for the past eight years while also hosting specials and doing interviews for ABC.
Walters amassed a total of 12 Emmy victories during the course of her illustrious career. Walters reportedly said to her audience after quitting The View, “I do not want to be on another programme or climb another mountain.
Instead, I would prefer to sit in a sunny field and enjoy the exceptionally talented women—and yes, some men too—who will be taking my place.
On September 25, 1929, in Boston, Barbara was born. She was a Sarah Lawrence College alumna. On NBC’s Today programme, she gained her first significant writing position in 1961. As they say, the rest is history.
The cause of death for Walters is currently unknown. It is still unknown if Walters had a disease when she passed away.
