Catherine O’Hara Looked ‘Super Skinny’ and Frail at Last Public Event Before Tragic Death

Catherine O’Hara looked noticeably frail during what turned out to be her last public appearance, just a few months before she passed away at 71.

The beloved star from Home Alone, Beetlejuice, and Schitt’s Creek attended the 2025 Angel Awards at the Proper Hotel in Santa Monica back in October. She was there smiling, posing with friends and her husband Bo Welch, dressed in a sharp green pinstriped pantsuit over a black shirt that seemed to help hide how thin she’d become.

One person who was at the event shared with the Daily Mail that she appeared really slender—it stood out. “Her face was almost gaunt, but she still looked very pretty,” they said. “She’s always been a striking woman, and she had that touch of glamour about her. The suit was a bit bulky, so it concealed her figure some.”

Even so, she came across as warm and in good spirits. The same source noted she was friendly, upbeat, and just lovely to be around. The Angel Awards honor chefs in LA who prepare and deliver meals to people dealing with serious, life-threatening illnesses—a cause that clearly meant something to her. She was seen chatting with others, even holding an auction paddle at one point, full of that familiar energy and charm.

She also posed on the red carpet with Bo, who was in a blue blazer and beige pants, and their three grown kids. In one shot from earlier that year, she wore a simple grey cardigan and managed to look graceful and composed, even if her health was quietly declining.

Sadly, things took a turn in late January 2026. Paramedics were called to her Los Angeles home early one Friday morning after she had trouble breathing. She was rushed to the hospital in serious condition and passed away later that day following a brief illness. Her cause of death hasn’t been made public.

Catherine had once opened up about living with dextrocardia with situs inversus—a rare condition where her heart and organs are mirrored from their usual positions. She found out later in life during a routine checkup with her husband. In a 2020 interview, she recounted the doctor’s surprise: “You’re the first one I’ve met!” She joked about not wanting to know all the details, and shared how Bo teased that her head must be on backwards.

Despite everything, right up to those final months, her wit, warmth, and that incredible spark never faded. Those last red-carpet smiles and quiet moments of grace really capture the kind of person she was—talented, kind, and unforgettable.

She leaves behind her husband Bo Welch and their sons, Matthew (31) and Luke (29). The world feels a little dimmer without her.
