A man gives up his first class for a mother with a crying sick baby

Anyone who has ever boarded a plan with a child will know how challenging it can be. Babies are unpredictable and can start crying or doing all the not-so-worth it. You don’t even have an option of things to do to salvage the situation as you are confined in space with strangers.

Kelzy didn’t know one of her fellow flyers was going to take notice of her situation with her 11-month-old daughter, Lucy.

The young mom was on her way to the children’s hospital with Lucy who had been born 11 weeks premature with her identical twin sister Eva.

Kelzy had just taken her seat when the flight attendant approached her with a message from another flyer. His words left her in tears…

Lucy was born blue and sick and came to the world at 29 weeks. She was very sick and was suffering from twin to twin Transfusion Syndrome – a direct complication of Kelsey’s pregnancy. She was placed on maximum support for her lungs shortly after being delivered.

Lucy and Eva were forced to stay in the NICU and were allowed to go home only a few months later. Lucy still required oxygen for some time later.

As time passed, her need for the extra oxygen reduced, though she still relied on it at night time and when flying. It was the latter reason that became of instant interest to Jason Kunselman of Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania.

Jason Kunselman is an industrial engineer by trade who was flying back home on his birthday after working in Florida. 

According to the Daily Mail, he had booked a first-class ticket for that reason and was settling down to get ready for his journey when he spotted Kelsey and Lucy boarding.

He took note of the oxygen machine that couldn’t enter the lockers, hence it had to sit with kelzy during the entire time. It was at this moment he formulated a plan before calling the flight attendant.

“We had smiles on our faces as we were headed to see her ‘friends’ at CHOP,” Kelsey explained in a Facebook post. We pre-boarded the plane, got cozy in our window seat and made jokes to those around us about having to sit by my yelling but-happy baby.”

A flight attendant came by later and told her a man in 2D was willing to switch seats.

“You were giving up your comfortable, first-class seat to us,” Kelsey wrote in her post.

Indeed, Jason’s gesture touched Kelsey so much that she began to cry. “Not able to hold back tears, I cried my way up the aisle while my daughter Lucy laughed! She felt it in her bones too… real, pure, goodness.

I smiled and thanked you as we switched, but didn’t get to thank you properly. Sooo… thank you. Not just for the seat itself but for noticing. For seeing us and realizing that maybe things are not always easy. For deciding you wanted to show a random act of kindness to US.

“It reminded me how much good there is in this world. I can’t wait to tell Lucy someday. In the meantime… we will pay it forward. It was a gesture of someone saying, I SEE you and this is what I can do.”

“As I sat in the roomy seat, I couldn’t help but reflect. First, the long road on not knowing if we could have children of our own. We got pregnant and were diagnosed with TTTS, a rare complication. Overnight we had to fly across the country to get a fetal surgery when I was pregnant. We didn’t know if they would survive the procedure, but these girls are fighters! They did amazing!”

Jason once again proves that good people still exist, and we should always show kind gestures to others.
