A Peek Into JD Vance’s Family Life: His Three Kids and That Fun Secret Service Nickname
JD Vance has had a whirlwind few years, going from senator to vice president alongside his wife, Usha. But amid all the political spotlight, the couple has worked hard to keep things normal at home for their three young children.
They’ve mostly shielded the kids from the public eye, sharing only occasional glimpses into their family world. One cute recent story? The little ones apparently get a big kick out of their dad’s Secret Service codename.

JD and Usha’s story started back at Yale Law School, where they met as classmates in the early 2010s. Usha, whose parents immigrated from India, grew up in San Diego and comes from an academic family—her dad was an engineer and lecturer, her mom a biology professor.
JD has talked openly about how Usha became his rock during those tough law school days, helping him feel less out of place and pushing him toward opportunities he might have missed otherwise. He even called her his “spirit guide” once, and joked about needing that strong voice in his ear telling him what to do (or not do).
Their differences—cultural, religious, everything—seem to have only brought them closer. They tied the knot with two ceremonies: one honoring Usha’s Hindu roots and another more traditional one. Faith plays a big role for them too; JD rediscovered his Christian beliefs later in life, getting baptized in 2018 with Usha’s full support, even though she was raised Hindu.
Family has always been huge for JD, especially after his own rough upbringing with a mom struggling with addiction and being raised largely by his grandparents. He’s said his biggest dream was simply being a good husband and dad, giving his kids the stability he didn’t always have. At the 2024 Republican National Convention, he even paused his speech to tell his watching children, “Daddy loves you very much—but get your butts in bed, it’s 10 o’clock!”
The Vances have three kids: two boys and a girl. Their oldest, Ewan, arrived in June 2017. Usha once laughed about how they found out the gender super early because JD couldn’t possibly wait any longer. By now, Ewan’s around 8 years old and growing up fast—JD has called him his “big boy” in recent chats.
Then came Vivek in February 2020. Work has kept JD away for some milestones, like one of Vivek’s birthdays when he was in the Senate. Instead of being there for dinner, JD read a Dr. Seuss book into the official record as a sweet message, saying he was sorry to miss it but that he loved his son tons. He’s about 5 now, and JD shared a heartwarming photo of the two of them fishing in Michigan back in 2024, calling it a great daddy-son morning.
Their youngest is daughter Mirabel, born in December 2021—an “early Christmas present,” as JD put it when announcing her arrival. She’s the family’s first girl, and at around 4 years old, she’s already stolen hearts in the few rare clips they’ve shared, like a funny blooper from an old campaign video.
The couple agrees on the big stuff when it comes to parenting: keeping things private, talking everything through, and just enjoying the chaos of raising little ones together. JD has said nothing changes that priority, no matter how high-profile his job gets.
One adjustment to the VP life? Secret Service protection, complete with codenames. JD’s is reportedly “Bobcat,” tying back to his Ohio roots and maybe some local sports teams. But the real hit at home is how the kids react to it all. Usha mentioned in an interview that the whole codename thing has been a source of endless amusement for the children—they think it’s hilarious.
It’s refreshing to see this side of a public figure: a dad just trying to balance big responsibilities with bedtime stories, fishing trips, and inside family jokes. The Vances seem determined to let Ewan, Vivek, and Mirabel have as ordinary a childhood as possible, even in the White House orbit.
