Before Donald: The Untold Story of Melania Trump’s Early Romances and Rise

Before she stepped into the spotlight, Melania Trump’s early romantic life was mostly under wraps — just whispers and small stories until recently.

Growing up in Sevnica, Slovenia (then Yugoslavia), Melania, born Melanija Knavs, showed early signs of ambition. Modeling took her from Slovenia to fashion capitals like Milan and Paris, and ultimately New York City. But while her public life was ascending, her private one stayed mostly quiet.

The Meeting with Donald

In 1998, Melania first encountered Donald Trump at a fashion week party in New York. The event was hosted by Paolo Zampolli, the Italian businessman who had signed her to his modeling agency. Even though Donald had arrived with someone, people say he was immediately taken with her. He asked for her number — but Melania declined. She had strong boundaries: she didn’t want to give out her contact details when she felt the timing or setting wasn’t right.

Her friend, Edit Molnar, says Melania was never one to jump into things lightly. She wasn’t “a party girl.” Even though her career meant her image appeared everywhere — billboards, magazine covers — off camera, she preferred quieter, simpler moments: going to the gym, watching a movie alone, staying at home.

Early Slovenian Romances

Before New York, there were a few early relationships, though how “official” they were depends on whom you ask.

Peter Butoln claims to have been Melania’s first love during her teenage years, back when she was in Ljubljana studying design. He says he was smitten from afar and that their romance ended when he went off for military service. He even remembers her sending him a postcard years later from the seaside. However, Melania’s representatives later said that while Peter made those claims, it wasn’t ever a serious relationship in the sense he described.

Jure Zorcic is another name often brought up. He says that in 1991, he spotted Melania walking down a street and felt compelled to say hello — the classic “I saw her, turned around, thought she was beautiful” story. According to him, they spent some time together: coffee, casual conversations, vacations with friends along the Croatian coast. But once Melania’s modeling career picked up and she moved to Milan and Paris, her life changed pace, and so did her circle.

A Life Quietly Changing

After Melania moved beyond Slovenia, life pulled in many directions. When she finally crossed paths with Donald again (after the 1998 introduction), it marked a shift: from quiet modeling life to one in the public eye. In early interviews, she didn’t hesitate to say she believed in Donald’s potential — not just as a businessman, but as someone with leadership qualities.

In 2005, Melania and Donald married at Mar-a-Lago in Florida, and the following year their son Barron was born. From then on, she would be known to the world — but her early years, the ones of quiet modeling, teenage affections, and reserved social life, remain those chapters that shaped her before the public stage.
