Billionaire Bill Ackman Gives $10K to ICE Officer in Renee Nicole Good Shooting Controversy

The recent tragedy in Minneapolis has left so many people heartbroken and divided. On January 7, 37-year-old Renee Nicole Good, a devoted mother of three, was fatally shot by ICE agent Jonathan Ross during an immigration operation just blocks from her home.

Renee was there as a volunteer legal observer—someone who shows up to watch and document law enforcement actions during raids or protests. Witnesses say she was unarmed and not posing any real threat, but authorities claim she tried to use her car as a weapon against the officer.

The incident sparked immediate fury, with protests filling the streets of Minneapolis over the weekend and beyond. People are still grappling with what happened, especially after video footage surfaced showing those final, terrifying moments.

Here are some powerful scenes from the protests that followed the shooting: These crowds came together to demand answers anjustice, carrying signs and voices calling for change.

Amid all this, the story took another turn when billionaire hedge fund manager Bill Ackman stepped in with a $10,000 donation to a GoFundMe set up for agent Jonathan Ross.

The page, meant to help cover potential legal costs, has pulled in hundreds of thousands so far. Ackman later explained his reasoning on X (formerly Twitter), saying he’s a firm believer in the principle that someone is innocent until proven guilty. He wrote that he supported Ross’s fundraiser and had actually tried to contribute to Renee’s family page too—but it had already been paused after raising over $1.5 million (way beyond its original $50,000 goal).

Ackman described the whole thing as a heartbreaking tragedy: an officer trying to do his job, and a protester whose split-second actions led to her death, even if she never meant to harm anyone. He added that our country would be stronger if we could all work together to sort out these painful, dividing issues.

Renee’s widow, Becca, shared such a touching tribute about her late wife through MPR News. She thanked everyone who’s reached out from near and far, saying the outpouring of kindness from strangers feels like the perfect way to honor Renee. “If you ever encountered my wife, Renee Nicole Macklin Good, you know that above all else, she was kind. In fact, kindness radiated out of her. Renee sparkled. She literally sparkled… Renee was made of sunshine.”

Becca went on to describe how Renee lived with this deep belief that there’s kindness in the world, and our job is to find it, nurture it, and spread it. As a Christian, she saw the core truth in all religions: we’re here to love, care for, and protect one another.

This story hits hard on so many levels—loss, justice, politics, and what it means to stand up for what’s right. It’s a reminder of how fragile and precious life is, and how quickly things can spiral in moments of tension.
