Do You Remember Phoebe Cates? Here’s Why the ‘Fast Times at Ridgemont High’ star disappeared

Phoebe Belle Cates was born July 16, 1963, in New York City. Phoebe was surrounded by actors as her father, Joe Cates, was a producer-director, and her uncle was the president of the Director’s Guild. Her brother was an ex-actor and her sister, Valerie, also worked on stage.

As a young girl, Phoebe was interested in Ballet and she was forced to quit after a knee injury and went on to become a model at the age of 14.

She appeared on the cover of Seventeen magazine four times but that wasn’t what she wanted for herself and went on to explore other horizons.

While speaking about her short modeling career, she said, ”It was just the same thing, over and over. After a while, I did it solely for the money.”

Immediately she saw a chance in Hollywood she took it. At a party in New York’s Studio 54, she met her film agent and then she trained with Robert Ravan, founder of The Actors’ Circle in New York.

She told The Daily Item in 1985, ”I just knew that I didn’t want to go to college. And that it would be a great way to get out of college if I could get a couple of movies or something. Seriously. It’s true.”

In 1982 she made her acting debut as Sarah in Paradise. That was the beginning of her short career as she went on to appear in the film Experienced and then the famous Fast Times at Ridgemont High with the legendary swimming pool scene.

The movie was a hit and the one frame which made the hearts of teenage boys beat faster. The Rolling Stone magazine was depicted as ”the most memorable bikini-drop in cinema history.”

Phoebe was building her career and it was moving great, but it all came to a halt after she had kids.

In 1989 Phoebe Cates got married to Kevin Kline who was 16 years older than her. In 1991, the couple welcomed a son, Owen Joseph, and had their daughter Greta Simone, three years after.

After having her two kids, Hollywood saw less of Cates and she only got to explain when she decided to step back years later.

The couple revealed that they decided to alternate acting jobs so that the children would never be without a parent. Even when it was Cate’s turn to work, she chose to stay with the children.
