Donald Trump has been a dad for quite a while now, with five kids from three different marriages. His youngest, Barron, just turned 19 this year—he was born back in 2006. But when Melania broke the news to him that she was expecting, it wasn’t exactly the over-the-moon response she might have hoped for right off the bat.

Barron grew up in the lap of luxury, no doubt about it. Right after his parents tied the knot in 2005, he had his own floor in Trump Tower where he could doodle on the walls and pretty much get whatever caught his eye. Still, Melania, who came from a modest, working-class family in Slovenia, wanted to instill something more grounded in him.

In her memoir, she describes this lively, messy scene in her home office when Barron was little—books scattered everywhere on the floor, and him zipping around in a toy car. During a chat on Fox, the former First Lady explained why she made a point of showing him her workday routine.

“I really believe it’s key to let our kids see that we’re out there hustling too,” she said. “It sets an example of what real life looks like. They get to watch us being productive, turning ideas into reality. That’s exactly what I was trying to show Barron.”

Before Melania, Donald had been married twice. His first marriage to Ivana lasted from 1977 to 1990, and they had three kids together: Donald Jr., Ivanka, and Eric. Then came his shorter stint with Marla Maples, which wrapped up after five years, and they had daughter Tiffany. Barron rounds out the bunch as the baby of the family, but if Donald had his way, there might have been a few more siblings in the mix.

Trump’s Surprising Take on the Pregnancy Reveal

In a Fox & Friends interview last year, Melania shared that Donald was all for expanding the family even after Barron arrived, while she was content with just the one.

“I was totally okay with having one child,” she recalled. “Donald kept pushing for more, but I was like, ‘Hey, our lives are crazy busy as it is.’”

Barron is Melania’s only kid, so you can bet she was thrilled when she found out she was pregnant about six months after their wedding. She couldn’t wait to tell Donald. But his initial reaction? Not what she anticipated.

In an old interview with People, Melania opened up about the moment: “He got home, and I said, ‘You’re going to be a dad.’ At first, he had to let it sink in—it was a total surprise. But then he was genuinely excited.”

Donald chimed in too: “I figured we’d have kids eventually, so it wasn’t a complete shock. What caught me off guard was how fast it all happened.”
