Erika Kirk Faces Fresh Backlash Over Emotional Hug with Jason Aldean
It’s only been a few months since Erika Kirk’s world fell apart with the assassination of her husband, Charlie Kirk. In that short, brutal time, she’s had to step up as the new CEO of Turning Point USA, the organization they built together. Every public appearance feels like walking through a minefield, and last week’s Fox Nation Patriot Awards proved it once again.
On November 6, 2025, Erika was there to accept the very first “Charlie Kirk Legacy Award.” Country star Jason Aldean and his wife Brittany presented it to her on stage. When the moment came to say thank you, Erika wrapped them both in long, tearful hugs. What should have been a tender, private second of gratitude instantly became internet fodder.

The clip of her hugging Jason spread like wildfire. Brittany stood right there, watching, and some people decided her facial expression looked “unimpressed.” Within hours the comments were brutal: “too touchy,” “desperate,” “disrespectful.” Others zoomed in frame-by-frame, timing the hugs like it was the Olympics. (For the record, she actually held onto Brittany longer, about ten seconds compared to eight with Jason.)
People have short memories. This isn’t even the first time Erika’s been dragged for showing basic human affection while grieving.

A few weeks earlier, at the University of Mississippi event where she was officially named TPUSA’s CEO, she had an emotional embrace with Vice President JD Vance. Again, the internet lost its mind over “hand placement” and how “intimate” it looked. A professional lip reader later revealed she was whispering that she didn’t think she could go on stage, and Vance was quietly telling her he was proud of her.
Look, some people are just huggers. When you’re carrying a pain that heavy, sometimes a hug is the only language left. But every single time Erika reaches for comfort, half the internet acts like she’s auditioning for a soap opera.
One commenter summed it up pretty well: “She’s trying not to cry in front of thousands of people and y’all are doing forensics on a hug. Give the woman some grace.”
Others weren’t so kind. “I’ve never bear-hugged my best friend’s husband like that,” one woman wrote. Another joked that Erika deliberately touched Brittany’s head too, “so she can say ‘see, I do it to girls as well!’”
Meanwhile, Erika keeps having to relive the worst day of her life in public. In a recent interview with Jesse Watters, she talked about the moment she got to the hospital after the shooting. A kind police officer gently suggested she wait before seeing Charlie’s body.
“He said, ‘I’ll never tell you that you can’t see your husband… but you don’t want to remember him like this,’” she recalled.
Her answer broke everyone’s heart:
“With all due respect, sir… I want to see what they did to my husband. And I want to give him a kiss, because I didn’t get to kiss him goodbye this morning.”
The trial of the 22-year-old accused shooter, Tyler Robinson, is still ongoing. Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty.
Through it all, Erika keeps showing up, speaking, leading, and yes, hugging people when words aren’t enough. Maybe instead of timing her embraces with a stopwatch, we could try a little compassion. She buried her husband a few months ago. She’s allowed to be human.
