Erika Kirk Finally Clears Up What Really Happened During That Viral Hug with JD Vance
The past two-and-a-half months have been an absolute nightmare for Erika Kirk that most of us can’t even begin to imagine.
On September 10, her husband Charlie Kirk—the father of their two young children and the outspoken co-founder of Turning Point USA—was gunned down in broad daylight. Ever since, she’s had to grieve in front of the entire world while strangers online pick apart every tear, every smile, every moment she’s “too emotional” or “not emotional enough.”

And if that wasn’t enough, the wild conspiracy theories that always swirl around high-profile deaths have been relentless—everything from claims that powerful people orchestrated the assassination to silence Charlie, to bizarre speculation about Erika herself.
In the middle of all this, Erika stepped into the spotlight in ways she never asked for. She spoke to a crowd of over 90,000 at Charlie’s memorial in Arizona, and just days later she took over as CEO of Turning Point USA.
Erika Kirk and Vice President JD Vance share a long embrace on stage at The Pavilion at Ole Miss, October 29, 2025, during a Turning Point USA event honoring the late Charlie Kirk.
Then came the moment that somehow broke the internet: a hug between Erika and Vice President JD Vance at a Turning Point event at the University of Mississippi at the end of October.
The hug lasted longer than people expected, and at one point Erika rested her hand on the back of JD’s head. Suddenly half the internet decided it was “inappropriate,” “weird,” or proof of… something. The clip went viral, the memes exploded, and the poor woman who just lost her husband became the latest target.

Erika gets emotional moments before the hug, during the same Turning Point USA event in Oxford, Mississippi.
Fast-forward to last Saturday (November 22), when Erika sat down with Megyn Kelly for a live event. She finally addressed the hug everyone wouldn’t stop talking about—and honestly, it’s the sweetest, most human explanation possible.
“My love language is physical touch,” Erika told Megyn. “So here’s exactly what happened: they’d just played this incredibly emotional tribute video. I’m already starting to cry as I walk across the stage toward him. He walks toward me. He hugs me and says, ‘I’m so proud of you.’ I whisper back, ‘God bless you,’ and I put my hand on the back of his head—like I do with pretty much everyone I hug when I say that.”
She laughed and added, “Any friend or family member I’ve ever hugged like that knows I touch the back of their head when I say ‘God bless you.’”
Megyn joked, “People online were acting like you grabbed his butt!”
Erika fired back with a grin: “Honestly? I think I would’ve gotten less hate if I had!”
The audience lost it.
At the end of the day, it was just two people who both loved Charlie Kirk sharing a heartfelt moment while Erika was still very much in the raw early days of grief. Nothing more, nothing less.
Yet somehow that simple hug became the latest excuse for the internet to pile on a grieving widow. Let’s maybe give her a break.
