Getting to Know Rama Duwaji, the Artist Married to NYC’s New Mayor Zohran Mamdani

When Zohran Mamdani stepped up to celebrate his historic win as New York City’s mayor—the first Muslim to hold the office and the youngest in more than a hundred years—there was someone special right by his side. His wife, Rama Duwaji, a talented 28-year-old artist, smiled quietly amid all the cheers.

Zohran’s journey to City Hall has been all over the news, but his relationship with Rama feels like something out of a sweet rom-com. It didn’t start with fancy events or political galas—it began on a dating app.

How They Met on Hinge

The two matched on Hinge back in 2021, right after Zohran had won his seat in the New York State Assembly. Rama, a Syrian-American illustrator living in Brooklyn, didn’t know much about local politics at the time. Zohran wasn’t chasing fame either.

Their first date was super casual: grabbing coffee at Qahwah House, this cozy Yemeni spot in Brooklyn, then strolling around McCarren Park. For date number two, Zohran showed her around his Astoria neighborhood—the same area that would later play a big role in his path to mayor.

Things moved quickly, and by October 2024, they were engaged. Rama posted on Instagram with some adorable photos, including an old one of Zohran as a kid, saying how proud she was.

Just after sharing their engagement news, Zohran kicked off his mayoral campaign. That December, they had their nikah and a beautiful engagement party in Dubai, on a rooftop with views of the Burj Khalifa. It was decorated with tons of white roses and lush greenery.

One event designer called it more than just a party—it was like a stunning floral setup against Dubai’s evening sky.

Their Low-Key New York Wedding

A couple months later, in February 2025, they tied the knot officially with a simple civil ceremony at the City Clerk’s Office in Lower Manhattan. Zohran later shared some photos online, writing about how much he loved that day.

One standout shot was this candid black-and-white pic of them on the subway at Union Square, holding onto a pole like any other New Yorkers. Rama looked gorgeous in a white dress and black boots, bouquet in hand, while everyone around them just went about their commute—probably no idea they were riding with the future mayor and his bride.

Zohran also addressed some online criticism at the time: “Three months ago, I married the love of my life, Rama, at the City Clerk’s office. Now, right-wing trolls are trying to make this race—which should be about you—about her. Rama isn’t just my wife; she’s an incredible artist who deserves to be known on her own terms. You can critique my views, but not my family.”

A Bit About Rama Duwaji

Rama was born in Houston, Texas, but her family moved to Dubai when she was nine. She came back to the U.S. for college, studying at Virginia Commonwealth University, then got her master’s in illustration from the School of Visual Arts in New York.

Her artwork has popped up in places like The Cut, Vogue, The New Yorker, and the BBC. She often explores ideas around identity, being a woman, and feeling displaced—especially focusing on Middle Eastern women, Gaza, and Palestinian stories.

With over 250,000 followers on Instagram, she shares a lot of her pieces there. In one interview this year, she talked about how art can help spread awareness: “I believe everyone has a responsibility to speak out against injustice, and art has such an ability to spread it.”

She added that with so many voices being silenced, she uses hers to highlight what’s going on in the U.S., Palestine, and Syria.

When she’s not working digitally, Rama loves making ceramics—especially those beautiful hand-painted blue-and-white plates with her illustrations on them.

Even though she skipped the usual political spouse stuff—no big speeches or magazine features—Rama quietly supported Zohran’s campaign in a big way. She helped create the look and feel of it, with those bright colors like Metrocard yellow, Mets blue, and firehouse red that were everywhere on posters and ads.

One person from the campaign team said she really shaped how they shared their message, and her touch was all over it, even if she stayed off the stage.

Heading to Gracie Mansion

Soon, the couple will pack up and move into Gracie Mansion. Rama will step into the role of New York’s First Lady—as the first Gen Z person to do so.

People on X (formerly Twitter) were buzzing about it: one said if Zohran wins, Rama would help shape history too, as the youngest first lady ever. Others called it exciting, with comments like “The new First Lady of NYC!” and “First-ever Gen Z First Lady!”

No matter if she keeps things low-key or dives into advocacy, Rama’s already changing what it looks like to be a partner in politics today.

Zohran Mamdani and Rama Duwaji are more than just the city’s latest power couple—they represent a fresh generation bringing creativity, strong beliefs, and real love to the forefront.
