Heartbreaking Loss Near the White House: Trump’s Odd Response When Asked About Attending a Young Soldier’s Funeral

A senseless shooting just blocks from the White House has left the country reeling this week. Two young National Guard members—20-year-old Sarah Beckstrom and 24-year-old Andrew Wolfe—were shot while on patrol in Washington, D.C. The FBI is treating the attack as possible domestic terrorism.

Late Thursday, President Donald Trump shared the devastating news during a Thanksgiving call with troops overseas: Sarah Beckstrom had succumbed to her injuries.

What Happened on That Horrific Afternoon

It was around 2 p.m. on Wednesday when 29-year-old Rahmanullah Lakanwal allegedly opened fire near the Farragut metro station with a .357 Magnum revolver. Sarah was hit in the head and chest. Andrew was also critically wounded—reportedly shot with Sarah’s own service weapon after a struggle.

Another Guardsman fought the attacker with nothing but a pocket knife until a fourth service member arrived and shot the suspect in the leg and buttocks, ending the attack.

Both Sarah and Andrew had only been sworn into the D.C. National Guard the day before.

Sarah’s father, Gary Beckstrom, spoke to The New York Times with a broken voice: “She has a mortal wound. It’s not going to be a recovery.”

Hours later, President Trump confirmed her passing to the troops: “She’s just passed away… She’s no longer with us. She’s looking down at us right now. Her parents are with her.”

He called Sarah “an incredible person, outstanding in every single way.”

The Moment That Raised Eyebrows

When a reporter asked the president if he planned to attend Specialist Beckstrom’s funeral, Trump replied:

“It is certainly something I could conceive of.”

Then, without missing a beat, he added:

“I love West Virginia, and I won West Virginia by one of the biggest margins of any president anywhere… These are great people… but I haven’t given it any thought.”

The room reportedly went quiet. Several journalists exchanged glances—many felt the pivot to his election numbers was jarring at such a somber moment.

Sarah was from the small town of Webster Springs, West Virginia. Back home, the local VFW post announced prayer vigils, now turned into memorials.

Their Facebook statement read: “Our hearts are absolutely broken… There are no words big enough for this loss. We will still gather—to honor Sarah’s memory, lift up her family, and pray for the other service member still fighting.”

People in town are tying blue ribbons everywhere—Sarah’s favorite color, and a symbol of service and sacrifice.

Funeral arrangements haven’t been announced yet.

The suspect, Rahmanullah Lakanwal, reportedly once served in a CIA-backed unit in Afghanistan before coming to the United States, according to sources who spoke with the Associated Press.

As the nation mourns a 20-year-old who had barely started her service, many are left shaking their heads at how quickly a moment of grief turned into a campaign talking point.
