John Depp has won his libel case against Amber Heard
John Depp has won his libel case against Amber Heard, saying he now has his life back’ after the jury ruled he was defamed and awarded him $15million
“Six years ago, my life, the life of my children, the lives of those closest to me, and also, the lives of the people who for many, many years have supported and believed in me were forever changed. And six years later, the jury gave me my life back. I am truly humbled,” Depp made in a statement after Wednesday’s verdict.
Depp walked away with a whooping sum of $8.35million.
Initially, he was awarded $15million – $10million in compensation and $5million in punitive damages.
Out of the three countersuit claims by Heard, she only got to win one and was awarded $2million in compensatory damages out of the $100million she was seeking in her countersuit against her ex-husband, Depp and she got nothing for punitive damages.
When the verdict was delivered, the actor wasn’t in the courtroom as he was on a tour with guitar legend Jeff Beck.
Heard walked into the courtroom looking anxious like she knew what the final verdict was going to be and when it was finally announced by the jury, she hugged her lawyers and left the courtroom while Depp’s legal team were happy with the turn out of events.
One of the most dramatic scenes in the courtroom was when the judge informed the jury they haven’t completed the paperwork and needs to exit the courtroom to get things in order.
”I need to give the forms back to you. When you find for a defamatory statement, one or more, you need to fill out the compensatory damages. It needs to be at least a dollar up to whatever the damages are. For punitive damages you can put a zero. I need those lines filled out. Retire back to the deliberation room and do that for me,” Judge Azcarate informed the Jury.
They had to leave for some moments before coming back to pronounce the final verdict.
Amber Heard wasn’t happy with the way things went and went on to post on her social media page, “The disappointment I feel today is beyond words. I’m heartbroken that the mountain of evidence still was not enough to stand up to the disproportionate power, influence, and sway of my ex-husband. I’m even more disappointed with what this verdict means for other women. It is a setback.
It sets back the clock to a time when a woman who spoke up and spoke out could be publicly shamed and humiliated. It sets back the idea that violence against women is to be taken seriously.”
Sexism being pointed out and many people believe that the jury ruled in favor of Depp because he is a sexist.
