Keith Urban Speaks Out on Those Nicole Kidman Divorce Rumors

The gossip mill went into overdrive when whispers started about Keith Urban and Nicole Kidman calling it quits—especially after Keith tweaked some lyrics mid-show. Now, the country star is setting the record straight.

Keith and Nicole have been married for nearly two decades, the kind of Hollywood couple everyone thought was rock-solid. So when news broke that they’re actually divorcing, it hit fans like a ton of bricks.

Word is they split quietly at the start of summer, but Nicole made it official on September 30, filing in a Tennessee court. She listed “irreconcilable differences” as the reason. Friends say she didn’t want this at all.

One of the first clues something was off came during a live gig when Keith switched up the words to “The Fighter.” Instead of singing, “When they’re tryna get to you, baby, I’ll be the fighter,” he went with, “When they’re tryna get to you, Maggie, I’ll be your guitar player.”

He was nodding to his guitarist, Maggie Baugh, who posted the clip on Instagram with a simple, “Wait… did he just say that?”

Fans lost it. A lot of them figured the song was about Nicole, so changing it felt like a public jab.

But Keith says hold up—don’t read too much into it.

At the final stop of his High and Alive World Tour in Nashville, he paused before launching into “You’ll Think of Me” and told the crowd, “I’ve been singing it this way forever.” Then he swapped “but you’ll think of me” to “but I betcha think about me.”

PEOPLE pointed out this isn’t new for him. Back in 2017, duetting with Carrie Underwood at the CMT Awards, he flipped “The Fighter” to “Carrie Underwood, I’m gonna be your fighter!”

He’s always said “The Fighter” came from early talks with Nicole—how he promised to protect her when life got rough. In a 2017 chat, he recalled, “It’s straight from a conversation my wife and I had way back. When things get heavy, I just hold her closer and try to take care of her.”

So—what’s your take on Keith changing those lyrics? Drop a comment and share this with a friend to hear their thoughts.
