Now 45 years old, Culkin fondly recalls his experiences while filming the classic 1989 film “Uncle Buck” alongside Candy, who had a unique knack for making those around him feel cared for. “John had this fatherly vibe that was really special,” Culkin said, reminiscing about the warmth Candy radiated on set.
As he looks back, Culkin acknowledges that even before he skyrocketed to fame with “Home Alone,” it was evident that his father was a difficult person. “It was hard to ignore how tough things were at home,” he reflected. “He had this dark side to him that was hard to miss.”
Coupled with this reflection on his father was a deep appreciation for Candy’s kindness. Culkin remembers how Candy would casually check in with him during filming, asking if everything was alright. “He had this instinct to look out for me,” Culkin noted, appreciating how rare that kind of care was in his life. “John was genuinely concerned, and it made a big difference. It felt good to know someone cared.”

As Culkin and his brother Kieran have talked about their challenging relationship with their father, it makes his bond with Candy all the more poignant. “I think that’s why I hold Uncle Buck so close to my heart. John wasn’t just acting; he was being a nurturing presence when I really needed one,” he shared. “He understood how to connect with kids and brought so much kindness into our scenes together.”
“John Candy: I Like Me” is set to be available on Prime Video on October 10, and through this documentary, Culkin’s heartfelt memories of Candy shine a light on the genuine care that can sometimes come from unexpected places—reminding us all of the impact a loving person can have in someone’s life.
