Melania Trump Laughs at King Charles’ Cheeky Hat Joke During State Visit

King Charles has always had a knack for bringing a bit of lightness to formal occasions, even as he’s worked to update the monarchy’s image since taking the throne. He’s the type to chat with everyday folks during walkabouts and isn’t shy about dropping a lighthearted comment or two.

That playful side came out recently when he welcomed Donald and Melania Trump for their second state visit to the UK. It was a historic moment—the first time any U.S. president has made two official state visits—and the Trumps arrived in mid-September, greeted first by Prince William and Kate before meeting the king and queen at Windsor Castle.

Donald and Charles spent a good amount of time together, while Melania joined Queen Camilla and Kate for some of her own engagements. But the real gem of the day was a small, charming exchange caught on camera when Charles greeted Melania.

She was sporting one of those signature wide-brimmed hats—this time in a bold purple—that occasionally shaded her eyes and became an instant talking point.

A lip reader, analyzing the moment for Metro, picked up what happened: Donald kicked things off politely, saying something like, “How are you doing? It’s a pleasure, Your Majesty. Thank you for inviting me.”

Then Charles turned to Melania with a grin and quipped, “I do hope the wind doesn’t blow away your hat.”

Melania burst into a genuine laugh—clearly delighted by the cheeky remark. It was one of those little human moments that cut through all the ceremony.

Her choice of that dramatic, low-slung purple hat sparked plenty of chatter too. Some fashion experts suggested it wasn’t random at all.

Stylist Marian Kwei, who works with Vogue, told the BBC she believes Melania deliberately picked something that partially obscured her face to shift the spotlight firmly onto her husband and his priorities during the visit.

It echoed her Inauguration look earlier that year, where a similar oversized hat drew attention for the same reason.
