Melania Trump Missing from Spotlight: Why She Hasn’t Been Seen in Over 20 Days
Donald Trump’s second term has kicked off with its usual whirlwind of headlines, and right now, a lot of the buzz is around his push to bring Greenland under U.S. control. He’s been talking about it nonstop—calling it essential for national security—and even his top people have jumped in, despite the massive pushback from Denmark, Greenland itself, and plenty of folks in Europe and NATO allies. It’s turned into one of those classic Trump controversies that just won’t quit.
Amid all that noise, though, one person who’s usually right there in the mix (or at least occasionally) has been noticeably missing: Melania Trump. The last time anyone really saw her out in public with her husband was during the New Year’s celebrations at Mar-a-Lago. Since then—over 20 days now—she’s pretty much vanished from the spotlight.

She did post a message on X back on January 20, thanking everyone for her first year as First Lady in this new chapter, but beyond that? Crickets. No appearances, no events, nothing.
Norwegian outlet Dagbladet picked up on it first, and it’s sparked some chatter. One commentator there, Sigrid Rege Gårdsvoll from Vårt Land and AmerikanskPolitikk.no, put it bluntly: Melania is “conspicuous by her absence.” She said it’s tough to even get a real sense of what kind of First Lady Melania wants to be because she’s just… not visible.
But is this really that shocking? Not according to Eirik Løkke, who’s an advisor at Civita and follows U.S. politics closely. He told Dagbladet that Melania stepping back is a deliberate move on her part.
“She does not want to take on a public role, but prefers to stay in the background,” he explained. “This was clear throughout the 2024 election campaign, compared to previous first ladies and wives of presidential candidates.”
He went on to say it’s a “conscious choice,” especially with how much attention Donald commands. In his view, everything else fades next to the president, and Trump probably isn’t eager for anyone else to steal the focus—particularly now, when the Greenland talk has cranked up the volume even more.
Honestly, if you’ve followed Melania over the years, this tracks. She’s never been the type to chase the cameras or dive into big public initiatives the way some previous First Ladies did. She made it pretty clear before the inauguration that she wasn’t planning to overhaul her life or take on a super active role this time around.
So while the internet loves speculating about “where is Melania?” moments, it seems like she’s just doing what she’s always done—keeping things low-key on her own terms. What do you think? Is she wisely avoiding the chaos, or does the absence stand out more than usual? Drop your thoughts below.
