Nancy Guthrie Disappearance: Individual Detained for Questioning in Suspected Kidnapping

Police in Arizona have detained someone for questioning in the case of Nancy Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of Today show co-host Savannah Guthrie, who vanished from her Tucson home.

This happened on Tuesday, February 10, according to the Pima County Sheriff’s Department. The person was pulled over during a routine traffic stop south of Tucson, and investigators are now looking into a related location they plan to search.

It’s not clear yet if this individual matches the armed, masked figure caught on video tampering with the camera outside Nancy’s front door—new images and footage of that person were just released by authorities on the same day.

The family has been through an incredibly tough time since Nancy was last seen on the evening of January 31. Her son-in-law, Tommaso Cioni, had dropped her off at home after dinner with her daughter Annie. The next day, when she didn’t show up to livestream a church service with a friend, the family reported her missing.

Investigators quickly determined she was likely taken against her will. They found what appeared to be a trail of blood on her front steps—DNA tests confirmed it matched Nancy’s. The Ring camera (or Nest, as some reports mention) had been messed with and parts removed from the door area.

There have also been claims of ransom notes sent to outlets like local station KOLD and TMZ, and the family released a heartbreaking video on Instagram where Savannah and her siblings spoke directly to whoever has their mom, saying simply, “We will pay.”

The FBI and sheriff’s office have been active in the area, including around Annie’s home just a few miles away, talking to neighbors and following leads. SWAT and bomb squad teams were even called in for some operation on Tuesday, though it’s unconfirmed if it ties directly to this case.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the FBI at 1-800-CALL-FBI or the Pima County Sheriff’s Office at 520-351-4900.

This remains an active investigation, and Nancy’s family continues to hold out hope she’s still alive.
