Neighbor Shares Chilling Account of Nancy Guthrie’s Suspected Kidnapping

The disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of Today show co-anchor Savannah Guthrie, has shaken the quiet Catalina Foothills neighborhood north of Tucson, Arizona. Nancy was last seen at her home on the evening of Saturday, January 31, after family dropped her off following dinner.

She didn’t show up for church the next morning, which prompted a friend to reach out. When her family checked the house and found her gone, they called authorities around noon on Sunday. What started as a missing person case quickly turned serious.

Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos has been blunt about what investigators believe happened. He described Nancy as sharp-minded and fully aware, someone who wouldn’t just wander off. She has physical limitations, relies on a cane, and needs daily medication that could become life-threatening if missed for too long.

At a press briefing, Nanos said investigators are convinced she was taken from her home against her will—possibly in the middle of the night. “We have an 84-year-old woman who went to bed Saturday night and by Sunday morning, she’s gone,” he explained. “She did not walk out of that home on her own.” Her phone, wallet, car, and meds were all left behind, which raised immediate red flags.

The house is now treated as a crime scene. Reports from law enforcement sources indicate signs of forced entry, and blood was found inside—though it’s unclear whose it is or exactly where. DNA evidence consistent with Nancy’s has also been collected. Authorities are reviewing nearby security footage, including from Ring cameras, and have asked residents to check theirs for anything unusual.

A neighbor named Morgan Brown, who lives about a quarter mile away, spoke to US Magazine about the eerie vibe in the area. She mentioned seeing several dark vans with blacked-out windows parked near Nancy’s house during the investigation. The neighborhood isn’t gated, and just steps off the road, it’s thick desert—cactus, mesquite trees, rocks, and scrub. Brown said it’s not the kind of place where you’d expect an elderly person with mobility issues to wander into, especially alone.

“It’s really strange circumstances,” Brown shared. “You don’t hear of a lot of weird stuff in the neighborhood. There are quite a few retirees and long-time residents here.” She couldn’t imagine why anyone would target an 84-year-old, though she wondered if it could somehow connect to Savannah’s public profile—maybe political or something else. “It’s horrible news,” she added.

The sheriff’s department is offering a reward of up to $2,500 for any photos, videos, or tips that lead to an arrest. They’ve emphasized they’re using every resource available, and the FBI is involved too. No suspects have been named, and it’s not clear if this was targeted or random.

Savannah Guthrie has stayed off the air to be with family in Arizona. She posted a heartfelt message asking for prayers: “We believe in prayer… Thank you for lifting your prayers with ours for our beloved mom, our dearest Nancy, a woman of deep conviction, a good and faithful servant. Bring her home.”

The whole situation feels incredibly unsettling for such a peaceful area. Everyone’s hoping for a safe resolution soon—thoughts are with the Guthrie family during this tough time.
