NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s Rude Gesture to King Charles at 9/11 Memorial Sparks Outrage
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani made headlines after his rather cool reception for King Charles during the royal visit to the 9/11 Memorial. The British monarch and Queen Camilla stopped by the memorial in New York as part of their US trip. They were greeted by former Mayor Michael Bloomberg and current Mayor Mamdani among others.
Mamdani shook hands with the king and exchanged a few words while smiling briefly but that was pretty much it for their interaction. He chose not to join the private tour or meet with Charles one on one.

His press secretary explained it clearly that morning saying the mayor would attend the wreath laying ceremony but would not have a private meeting with the king.
When asked about it Mamdani did not hold back. He said that if he were to speak with the king separately he would probably urge him to return the Koh i Noor diamond. That famous gem which sits in the crown once worn by the Queen Mother has long been a point of debate. Many believe it was taken unfairly during British colonial times from its original owners in India.
The diamond which is over 100 carats and the size of a small egg was given to Queen Victoria back in 1849 after the annexation of a kingdom in what is now Pakistan and India. The controversy around it has never really faded.
Mamdani who has roots connected to South Asia made his position known without hesitation. Not everyone was impressed with his approach. The New York Post editorial team was particularly sharp in their criticism calling it a performative move that showed poor judgment for someone in his position. They suggested his personal views got in the way of basic diplomatic duties.
Still the moment captured attention online and in the news with many debating whether it was a bold stand or simply rude.
The whole episode highlights how personal and historical sensitivities can spill into public moments even during what was meant to be a solemn visit remembering the victims of 9/11. King Charles continued his schedule while Mamdani stuck to his public duties at the ceremony.
