Paterson Grieves: Family of Five, Including Three Children, Lost in Halloween Night Blaze

A devastating house fire in Paterson, New Jersey, claimed the lives of five family members—three of them children—on Halloween night, leaving the tight-knit community reeling from the unimaginable loss.

Firefighters and police rushed to the two-story home around 9:50 p.m. on October 31 after reports of a blaze. What they encountered was a raging inferno, fueled by strong winds that pushed flames quickly from the first floor up to the second. The intense heat was so fierce that it melted the siding on the neighboring house, and one of the top-floor windows was left dangling from its hinge, blown out by the force of the fire.

Inside the second floor, rescuers found the bodies of a 39-year-old man, a 38-year-old woman, and their three children, aged 14, 12, and 7. Paterson Fire Chief Alejandro Alicea described the scene as heartbreaking. “Losing an entire family of five like this is the biggest loss we’ve seen in a long time,” he said. “It’s not common to have so many deceased. It’s a tragedy.”

Neighbors tried desperately to help. Some who lived on the first floor attempted to reach the family upstairs, but the staircase was already engulfed in flames. One resident even grabbed a garden hose in a frantic effort to douse the fire. “They were really good people, friendly,” neighbor John Miller told reporters. “Every time I’d drive by, they would always wave. To hear about this, it’s unbelievable.”

Mayor Andre Sayegh, visibly shaken, spoke of the profound grief gripping the city. “The city of Paterson is in mourning,” he said. “I’ve been mayor for seven years, had some very painful moments, particularly during the pandemic, but this tragedy really hurts my heart.”

The fire started on the first floor, in the rear of the house, and spread rapidly. Two firefighters—a captain and another responder—were taken to the hospital for treatment after battling the blaze. Investigators are still working to determine the cause, but Chief Alicea emphasized there’s no sign of anything suspicious so far.

Seven survivors from the home, including a young girl with special needs, escaped the flames. The American Red Cross stepped in immediately, providing emergency shelter, food, clothing, and support. Volunteers were on the scene that night and continued helping families in the days that followed.

In a city still processing the shock, the loss of an entire family in one night has left a wound that will take a long time to heal.
