Prince Harry Reveals What Meghan Markle Prayed for at Princess Diana’s Grave
Prince Harry has often reflected on the deep connection he still feels to his late mother, Princess Diana, and the ways he tries to keep her memory present in his own family life. Though Meghan Markle never met Diana, Harry arranged for his wife to visit her grave at Althorp, the Spencer family estate in England, during a private trip in 2022.
That year marked the twenty-fifth anniversary of Diana’s death, and the moment carried extra weight for Harry as he brought the woman he loved to a place that had always been profoundly personal to him.

He described the visit in his memoir Spare. The couple rowed out to the small island where Diana is buried. Harry went ahead first, placing flowers on the grave and taking a quiet moment to speak to his mother in his thoughts, telling her he missed her and asking for guidance and clarity, something he had done on previous visits. He gave Meghan space for her own moment. When he returned, he found her kneeling at the stone with her eyes closed and her palms resting against it.
Later, as they walked back toward the boat, Harry asked what she had prayed for. Meghan’s reply was simple and direct. She had prayed for clarity and guidance.
The visit came at a time when Harry and Meghan had already stepped back from royal life and were building their family away from the pressures of the monarchy. Harry has spoken before about wanting his children to know their grandmother through the stories and values he carries forward. Bringing Meghan to the grave felt like one more way of linking the past he lost too soon with the life he was creating.
Royal expert Tom Bower has written in his book House of Beckham that Meghan appeared to see herself stepping into a prominent public role similar to the one Diana once held, especially after the couple’s successful early tours. He also noted her frustration at feeling lower in the royal hierarchy than Catherine, the Princess of Wales. These observations reflect one commentator’s view of the dynamics at the time rather than any confirmed statements from Meghan herself.
Harry’s account of the graveside moment remains one of the more personal glimpses he has shared about trying to bridge his mother’s memory with his marriage. It is a quiet scene, stripped of spectacle, focused on a simple act of respect and a short, heartfelt prayer.
