Prince Harry Takes a Cheeky Swipe at Trump on The Late Show

Prince Harry and Donald Trump have never exactly been pen pals. Over the years the pair have traded a few barbs, and on Wednesday night the Duke of Sussex decided to lean into it with a pretty sharp joke on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.

Harry was there to promote his charity work and the Invictus Games, but the real moment everyone’s talking about came during a silly sketch the two cooked up. In it, Harry “auditioned” to star in one of those ultra-cheesy Hallmark Christmas movies as a fictional “Gingerbread Christmas Prince” who saves Christmas in Nebraska. Colbert, playing the skeptical casting director, insisted Americans aren’t obsessed with royalty.

Harry’s deadpan reply?
“Really? I heard you elected a king.”

The studio audience let out a loud “oooh” mixed with some boos, and Colbert pretended to be shocked. It was clearly a playful jab at Trump, nodding toward the whole “No Kings” push from critics who worry about authoritarian vibes. Harry delivered it with perfect comic timing and that trademark half-smirk.

The dig comes against a bit of backstory. Trump has repeatedly said that if he won the election (which he obviously did), he wouldn’t necessarily “protect” Harry from possible deportation over the drug admissions in Spare. Back in March 2024 he told reporters, “We’ll have to see if they know something about the drugs, and if he lied they’ll have to take appropriate action.” He’s also called Harry’s treatment by the Royal Family “unforgivable” and said the late Queen was “too gracious” to him.

Harry, for his part, has mostly stayed quiet about Trump’s second term. He’s previously said he has no plans to become a U.S. citizen and seems perfectly happy raising Archie and Lilibet in Montecito. But when you get him on a late-night couch with Stephen Colbert handing him tequila shots (yes, that happened too), the gloves come off, just a little.

Whether the joke will ruffle any transatlantic feathers remains to be seen, but one thing’s clear: Harry’s got jokes, and he’s not afraid to use them.
