Remembering Judge Frank Caprio: The Kindest Judge Who Touched Hearts Everywhere
It’s a sad day for Rhode Island and fans around the world—Judge Frank Caprio, the compassionate face behind the TV show “Caught in Providence,” has passed away at 88. He died peacefully on August 20, 2025, after fighting pancreatic cancer with incredible strength, as shared by his family on Instagram.
If you’ve ever scrolled through TikTok or YouTube, chances are you’ve seen clips of Judge Caprio in action. He wasn’t your typical stern judge; instead, he dished out rulings with a hefty dose of empathy and humor, earning him the well-deserved nickname “the nicest judge in the world.” His show, which aired from 2018 to 2020, featured real cases from Providence’s municipal court, and those heartwarming moments—like forgiving tickets for folks down on their luck—went viral, racking up millions of views.

The family’s tribute on Instagram painted a beautiful picture of the man he was: “Beloved for his compassion, humility, and unwavering belief in the goodness of people, Judge Caprio touched the lives of millions through his work in the courtroom and beyond. His warmth, humor, and kindness left an indelible mark on all who knew him.” They went on to remember him as a devoted husband, father to five, grandfather to seven, and great-grandfather to two, whose legacy is all about inspiring kindness in others. “In his honor, may we each strive to bring a little more compassion into the world — just as he did every day,” the post urged.
Caprio’s battle with cancer became public in December 2023, right after his 87th birthday. In a raw video on social media, he opened up about the shock, saying, “This birthday is a little different than any other I have ever had.” He kept fighting, finishing his last radiation treatment in May 2024, but just a day before his passing, he posted another video from his hospital bed, thanking everyone for their support and asking for more prayers as things took a turn.

Rhode Island Governor Dan McKee called him a true “Rhode Island treasure” who faced his illness with remarkable bravery. To honor his memory, McKee directed that flags be flown at half-staff across state buildings and agencies until the day of his interment—a fitting tribute for someone who gave so much to his community.
From his humble beginnings on Federal Hill in Providence, where he worked odd jobs as a kid, to becoming a teacher, lawyer, and judge elected in 1985, Caprio’s life was all about service. He even set up scholarships in his father’s name and chaired the state’s higher education board for a decade. When he retired in January 2023 after nearly 40 years on the bench, they renamed the courtroom after him.

Judge Caprio wasn’t just a figure on TV; he reminded us all that a little understanding goes a long way. He’ll be missed dearly, but his spirit of kindness? That lives on in every one of us he inspired.
