Savannah Guthrie Breaks Down in Tears on Today Show Return
Savannah Guthrie got emotional during her appearance on Today with Jenna & Sheinelle, opening up about the challenges of returning to the show after her mother’s disappearance.
She sat with her close friend Jenna Bush Hager and shared how tough it has been to step back into her role while carrying such heavy pain.

“First of all, I can’t really even look at you every day without crying,” Savannah told Jenna through tears. “You are my best friend. You know, it’s really hard to come back. I’ve been trying so hard to hold it together, and I promise I will.”
The 54 year old journalist explained that seeing Jenna each morning brings a mix of comfort and overwhelming emotion as she works to stay professional. Being around someone who truly sees her struggles makes it harder to keep everything bottled up while still doing her job.
“When I see you in the morning, I know you see me, no matter what is going on,” she said. “And sometimes that’s almost too much because I feel like to do the job I gotta keep it together, pull it together. But I’m happy to be back. It’s like the two hours of my day. It’s not that I’m not thinking about it, because I am, but it’s something to do and it brings me a lot of joy to be with everybody. But no, it’s not easy.”

Savannah described the morning show as a small break in her difficult days, though the heartache over her mom Nancy never really leaves. “It’s always with me,” she shared. “I cry every morning on the way to work, and I cry every morning on the way home. And I’m grateful to have good friends and to be able to come to such a beautiful and joyous and supportive place. Like so many people out there, you can hold all of these things together. I try to tell my kids that too. We can hold our sadness and we can hold our joy. And if you don’t believe it, just watch me.”
She acknowledged that viewers might wonder how she manages to smile on air. “I know maybe people wonder, ‘Whoa, what’s going on? How’s she able to do that job? Is she not thinking about it? Did she forget?’ No, never. Never,” Savannah said firmly.
As for her mother’s case, she asked for continued prayers and hoped someone with information would come forward. “We still need everybody’s prayers. I wish someone would call and say what they know and tell the truth.”

Nancy Guthrie, who was 84, was last seen at her home in Tucson, Arizona, on the evening of January 31. She was reported missing the next day after missing a virtual church service. The family has been searching tirelessly, offering a substantial reward for any leads, while authorities continue their investigation.
This moment comes months after Savannah first returned to the show in April, following time away to focus on her family. Her honest words highlighted both the strength she draws from her faith, her children, and her colleagues, as well as the deep ongoing anguish they all feel.
