Trump spotted raising a glass during his China visit

People are buzzing online after seeing footage from Donald Trump’s recent trip to Beijing. During a formal event with President Xi Jinping, the US leader appeared to take a sip from a champagne glass, even though he’s long said he doesn’t touch alcohol.0

It happened right after a toast in Mandarin. Trump stood there listening carefully, then grabbed a glass from a passing waiter, lifted it in respect to his host, and took a proper gulp before setting it back down and clapping along with everyone else. The moment quickly went viral, with many calling it a surprising break from his personal rules as a sign of goodwill between the two leaders.

The summit on May 14 included all the usual pomp – grand welcome, talks on trade, Taiwan, and global issues – plus some lively media chaos beforehand. But this toast stole the spotlight for a lot of viewers.

Trump has always been open about why he stays away from drinking. His older brother Fred struggled with alcoholism and passed away young in 1981. That loss hit the family hard, and Trump has said it convinced him never to start. In past interviews, like one with Fox News years ago, he explained it simply: if you don’t begin, you won’t have the problem. He even applied the same strict approach with his own kids, steering them clear of alcohol, cigarettes, and drugs.

Of course, not everyone’s convinced the glass held alcohol that night. It could have been something non-alcoholic, given the formal setting. Still, the gesture came across as a classy way to honor Xi and the moment.

Whether it was a one-time exception or just optics, the clip has folks talking about leadership, respect across cultures, and how personal boundaries sometimes bend on the world stage. What do you think – nice diplomatic touch or breaking his own code?
