Tucson Police Hunt for Nancy Guthrie After Ransom Notes Demand Millions – Savannah Guthrie Issues Emotional Plea

The disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of “Today” show co-anchor Savannah Guthrie, has left everyone shaken. What started as a quiet weekend in her home near Tucson, Arizona, has turned into a full-blown investigation with chilling details emerging day by day.

Nancy was last seen on Saturday evening, January 31, after having dinner with her daughter Annie. Annie dropped her off at home around 9:30 p.m. Everything seemed normal—until Sunday morning. Nancy didn’t show up for church, which her family says was completely out of character for her. By noon, they reported her missing.

Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos quickly made it clear this wasn’t a case of an elderly person wandering off. “She is as sharp as a tack,” he said, emphasizing that Nancy has no dementia or cognitive issues. She’s in her 80s, about 5’5” and 150 pounds, with limited mobility and health conditions that require daily medication—medication she didn’t have with her when she vanished.

When deputies searched the house, they found her Apple Watch left behind. A law enforcement source noted that her pacemaker stopped syncing around 2:00 a.m. Sunday. There were also traces of blood outside her door—police later confirmed it was hers.

A former NYPD hostage negotiator, Wallace Zeins, shared a troubling theory in a CNN interview. Given Nancy’s age, weight, and physical limitations—she can’t easily walk or run—he believes more than one person had to be involved in taking her. “Something’s off,” he said, pointing to how unlikely a solo abduction would be.

Investigators are treating the home as a crime scene. A security camera at the front door appears to have been disconnected or removed shortly before she disappeared. Fingerprints and DNA samples from the house have been sent for testing.

Adding to the fear, several media outlets—including TMZ, CNN’s Tucson affiliate, and others—received alleged ransom notes demanding millions in Bitcoin for Nancy’s safe return. The notes reportedly included specific details about the inside of her home. Sheriff Nanos hasn’t fully confirmed if they match the scene but said they’ve been shared with the family and are under review. The FBI is involved, and they’ve offered a $50,000 reward for information leading to her recovery.

Zeins thinks the Bitcoin demand could actually help— it suggests the people behind this are tech-savvy, maybe even active online. If the notes were handwritten, there could be DNA; if digital, there might be a trail.

Former FBI profiler Candice DeLong added a sobering note: in most kidnappings of people over 80, the offender is someone the victim knows.

Police helicopters have been scanning the desert nearby in a systematic grid search. President Donald Trump mentioned speaking with Savannah and said he’s deploying all resources to bring her mother home safely.

The family is heartbroken. Savannah stepped back from her planned role hosting the 2026 Winter Olympics opening ceremony to focus on this crisis. She and her siblings posted an emotional video plea on Instagram: they’re ready to talk, but they need undeniable proof Nancy is alive. “We live in a world where voices and images can be easily manipulated,” Savannah said.

Her brother Camron followed up, saying they haven’t heard directly from anyone yet but are waiting for contact.

As one person online put it, targeting an elderly woman like this is just sick.

The search continues into its sixth day with no suspects named yet, but authorities insist they believe Nancy is still out there. They urge anyone with information to contact the Pima County Sheriff’s Department at 520-351-4900. The FBI is also involved.

This is every family’s nightmare, and the hope is that she’ll be found safe soon.
