Chilling Surveillance Footage Captures Nick Reiner’s Last Moments of Freedom Before Arrest in Parents’ Murder Case

If convicted of killing his parents, the legendary director Rob Reiner and his wife Michele Singer Reiner, their son Nick could be facing the death penalty.

Freshly released video from a gas station surveillance camera shows Nick in the final minutes before police took him into custody on suspicion of the double murder.

The bodies of Rob Reiner and Michele were discovered in their Brentwood home on Sunday, December 14, leaving Hollywood and beyond in complete shock. Their 32-year-old son, Nick, now stands accused of two counts of first-degree murder.

Reports say Nick had a tense confrontation with his dad at Conan O’Brien’s holiday party the night before, on December 13. One guest told TMZ that Nick seemed off, acting erratic and repeatedly asking people if they were celebrities, which made everyone uncomfortable.

What exactly unfolded afterward remains unclear, but by Sunday afternoon, their daughter Romy found her parents dead inside the family home. Sources described it as a gruesome scene, with the couple having passed several hours earlier—rigor mortis had already begun to set in.

Nick was picked up by police that same evening.

In the newly surfaced footage from a convenience store, Nick looks eerily calm as he buys a canned drink just shortly before his arrest. Dressed in jeans, a striped jacket, baseball cap, and carrying a red backpack, he casually pulls out his wallet and pays the cashier like it’s any ordinary day.

The clip, shared by ABC7, was taken late Sunday night, right before Nick turned himself in—or was located—on a street in Los Angeles, about 15 miles away from the Brentwood house.

Other images and video that briefly appeared online (later removed by LAPD) showed the arrest itself: patrol cars surrounding him around 9:15 p.m., officers drawing weapons, then forcing him face-down on the pavement to cuff him. He was wearing the same outfit as in the store video.

There’s also separate footage of Nick strolling past another gas station late Saturday night, just hours before the killings are believed to have happened early Sunday.

Los Angeles District Attorney Nathan Hochman spoke out strongly: “Rob Reiner was a brilliant actor and director, a true giant in entertainment for decades. Michele Singer Reiner was just as remarkable—a talented photographer and producer. This loss is heartbreaking beyond words. We’ll do everything to ensure justice for whoever took their lives.”

He confirmed the charges against Nick could lead to life without parole—or the death penalty, though no final call has been made on that yet.

This tragedy has hit hard, reminding everyone how fragile life can be, even in the spotlight.
