Trump Fires Back Amid Backlash Over His Harsh Words on Rob Reiner’s Passing
President Donald Trump isn’t letting up, even after catching heat from all sides for his sharp remarks following the heartbreaking death of filmmaker Rob Reiner. He’s digging in deeper, calling the director “deranged” and saying he was “very bad for our country.”
The film industry is still reeling from the loss of Rob Reiner, who was 78, and his wife Michele, 68, over the weekend. Authorities say the couple was discovered deceased in their L.A. home on December 14, both from fatal stab wounds.

Things took an even darker turn when their son, Nick Reiner, 32, was arrested in connection with the incident.
A Heated Exchange
Reports from TMZ indicate that the father and son—who’s said to battle addiction—got into a major shouting match the night prior, right at a Christmas gathering thrown by Conan O’Brien.
One insider told People that Nick was acting erratic, freaking folks out by quizzing everyone on whether they were celebrities, which prompted the couple to bail early.
The following day, their daughter Romy, 28, found their bodies.
Trump’s Controversial Take
As heartfelt messages flooded in from Hollywood and political circles, Trump stirred up a storm with his post on Truth Social soon after the news hit.
Instead of sympathies, he went after Reiner, blaming it on what he calls “Trump Derangement Syndrome” or TDS.
“Something really sad went down in Hollywood last night. Rob Reiner, this tormented guy who used to be a talented director and comedian, passed away along with his wife Michele. Word is it stemmed from the fury he stirred up in others because of his intense, unstoppable case of TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME, aka TDS, which messes with the mind big time,” Trump posted on December 15.
“He drove people nuts with his fixation on President Donald J. Trump, his paranoia hitting peak levels as the Trump era smashed through every benchmark of success, ushering in what might be America’s greatest era ever. Rest in peace to Rob and Michele!”
The post’s vibe and timing drew massive flak, including from some of his own supporters.
What His Base Thinks
One self-proclaimed MAGA fan commented under the post: “I’ve backed you through thick and thin as a MAGA supporter, but not on this. Every single person deserves some respect in a moment like this. I’m disappointed you put that out there. Time to step back, apologize, and own up to a major misstep.”
Another chimed in: “Mr. President, pull this down. It’s in poor taste and doesn’t suit you or the office.”
A third added: “We’re above this. Voted for you three times, but man… this is rough.”
GOP Voices Speak Out
Even Marjorie Taylor Greene from Georgia, a key ally, pushed back, saying it wasn’t the right approach.
She shared on Facebook with a screenshot of Trump’s words: “Rob Reiner and his wife met a tragic end at the hands of their son, who apparently dealt with addiction and other troubles. Their other kids are devastated. This is about a family’s pain, not politics or settling scores.”
“It’s heartbreaking and calls for compassion, especially in a murder case,” she wrapped up.
Thomas Massie, the Kentucky Republican who’s usually all-in for Trump, didn’t hold back either.
“No matter your opinion of Rob Reiner, mocking someone who’s just been murdered like this is wrong and disrespectful. Are my fellow Republicans, the VP, and White House folks just gonna pretend it didn’t happen out of fear? Who’s gonna stand up and say this ain’t okay?” he posted on X with Trump’s screenshot.
According to the AP, even less vocal Trump critics like New York’s Mike Lawler and Oklahoma’s Stephanie Bice slammed the statement, showing cracks in party unity that’s pretty unusual.
Trump Stands Firm
But Trump didn’t budge—in fact, he ramped it up when chatting with reporters in a quick session.
“I wasn’t a fan, not one bit,” he said, per the AP. “When it came to Trump, the guy was unhinged.”
Speaking about himself in third person, he kept going: “He was buddies with Russia, under their thumb, and bad news for America.”
“He pushed that whole Russia hoax,” the president alleged. “Ruined his own career… turned into a total nutcase with Trump derangement syndrome.”
Reiner’s Past Criticism
Reiner, behind hits like When Harry Met Sally, The Princess Bride, and A Few Good Men, never shied away from blasting Trump, once calling him “mentally unfit” for the job.
“Donald Trump is the least qualified person ever to hold the presidency. He’s not right in the head,” Reiner said to Variety back in 2017. “He doesn’t get government at all and has zero interest in learning.”
