Erika Kirk’s Awkward Slip-Up at AmericaFest Sparks Online Frenzy

Erika Kirk has been front and center ever since her husband, Charlie Kirk, was tragically assassinated back in September. She’s stepped up as CEO of Turning Point USA, the organization he founded, and has been pouring everything into keeping his legacy alive.

But during a speech at TPUSA’s big AmericaFest event in Phoenix last weekend, she had one of those moments that instantly blew up online.

It happened on Saturday, December 20, while Erika was presenting the first-ever Charlie Kirk Courage Award to Caleb Chilcutt, a student from Utah Valley University—the same campus where Charlie was killed. Caleb had been deeply involved in organizing events and even helped set up a memorial for Charlie afterward.

As Erika, who’s 37, was praising Caleb’s dedication, she said something like: “Despite the devastating loss of my incredible husband Charlie… Caleb has persisted with the same grift—” before catching herself. She quickly added, “excuse me, gift,” and then finally, “grit.”

She put her hand on her chest, let out a sigh, leaned into the podium, and told the crowd, “It’s been a long day.” Then, looking right at Caleb, she smiled and said, “Trust me, you’re not a grifter, honey. It’s all good.”

Of course, the clip spread like wildfire on social media. A lot of people called it the “greatest Freudian slip of all time,” with comments like “The truth just slipped out!” or “Sooner or later, it always comes out.”

Others pointed out her quick grin afterward, saying it was the “shameless grin of all time.”

AmericaFest ran from December 18 to 21 and drew huge crowds, but this little flub ended up being one of the most talked-about parts of the whole thing.

What do you make of it—was it just an honest mix-up after a tough few months, or something more? People are definitely divided.
