The Heartbreaking Story Behind the Unspoken Rule in Rob Reiner’s Home

It’s hard to imagine the pain a family goes through when dealing with a child’s ongoing struggles, but for Rob Reiner and his wife Michele Singer Reiner, it was a reality they faced for years with their son Nick.

The couple was tragically found murdered in their Brentwood home in Los Angeles on December 14. The news sent shockwaves through Hollywood, especially as details emerged about their son Nick’s involvement.

Nick, 32, was arrested that same day and later charged with two counts of first-degree murder. Their youngest daughter, Romy, discovered her father’s body around 3:40 p.m. after a massage therapist couldn’t get into the house.

A source close to the family told The New York Post that Romy called out for Nick as she searched the home, knowing he’d been there the night before—but she didn’t see him.

Nick had been living in the guesthouse on the property. He had a well-documented history of mental health challenges and substance abuse issues.

Friends and insiders have shared memories from when Nick was younger. One recalled an incident from when he was about 11 that highlighted how difficult things could be. Nick was described as a very energetic kid who sometimes had intense outbursts.

“He would throw fits,” a source said. “He was a very hyper little boy. They always had to keep an extra eye on him.”

Over time, it became something of an unspoken understanding in the household—including among staff—to just “give him what he wants” to keep things calm and avoid escalation.

As he grew older, Nick’s struggles deepened. Reports say he went through at least 18 rehab programs and dealt with periods of homelessness. More recently, he was diagnosed with schizophrenia just weeks before the incident, and a change in his medication reportedly left him acting unpredictably.

One source described him as being “out of his head” in the days leading up.

After the tragedy, Nick reportedly checked into a hotel in Santa Monica, where staff later found the room covered in blood.

In his first court appearance this week, Nick wore a blue suicide prevention vest. He didn’t enter a plea and only spoke briefly to confirm he was waiving his right to a speedy arraignment, saying, “Yes, your honour.”

This devastating event has left so many questions unanswered, and it’s a reminder of how mental health and addiction can tear families apart in the most unimaginable ways.
