Heartbreaking Loss: Dallas Cowboys’ Marshawn Kneeland Dead at 24 After Tragic Police Chase
The NFL world is reeling today after the shocking death of Dallas Cowboys defensive end Marshawn Kneeland, just 24 years old. What started as a routine traffic stop spiraled into something no one saw coming, and now the league—and everyone who knew him—is left grappling with the unimaginable.
The Cowboys dropped the gut-wrenching news in a statement yesterday morning: “It is with extreme sadness that the Dallas Cowboys share that Marshawn Kneeland tragically passed away this morning. Marshawn was a beloved teammate and member of our organization. Our thoughts and prayers regarding Marshawn are with his girlfriend Catalina and his family.”

His agent, Jonathan Perzley, broke the news on X, his words hitting like a ton of bricks. “I am shattered to confirm that my client and dearest friend Marshawn Kneeland passed away last night,” he wrote. “I watched him fight his way from a hopeful kid at Western Michigan with a dream to being a respected professional for the Dallas Cowboys.”
Details started trickling out later, painting a picture that’s tough to stomach. According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, troopers tried pulling over a vehicle for a traffic violation on the northbound Dallas North Tollway near Keller Springs Blvd. But the driver—later identified as Kneeland—didn’t stop. What followed was a pursuit that ended when officers lost sight of the car, calling it off for safety.
They found the vehicle abandoned down the road, wrecked out on the southbound lanes near Warren Parkway. With help from DPS aircraft, troopers, and Frisco PD, they searched the area and discovered Kneeland deceased from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. It’s being investigated as a possible suicide, with the Collin County Medical Examiner’s Office set to confirm the final cause.
Frisco police added that around 11:40 p.m. the night before—Wednesday—they’d responded to a welfare check at Kneeland’s place in Plano. No one answered the door, and that’s all they’ve said so far. The whole thing unfolded just after 1:30 a.m. Thursday.

This comes right on the heels of one of his career highlights. Drafted in the second round out of Western Michigan back in 2024, the Michigan kid had already made his mark. He played 11 games as a rookie, missing some to injury but showing real promise.
This season, he’d stepped up big—seven games in, 12 tackles, a sack, and yeah, that first career touchdown just days ago. During Monday Night Football against the Arizona Cardinals, he scooped up a blocked punt in the end zone for six points in a loss. Teammates were buzzing about him; he was wearing his late mom’s ashes in a necklace around his neck, a quiet tribute that said everything about the guy.
The outpouring’s been nonstop. The NFL chimed in: “We are deeply saddened by the tragic news of the passing of Cowboys’ Marshawn Kneeland. Our thoughts and prayers are with his girlfriend Catalina, family, friends and his teammates.” Cowboys QB Dak Prescott and others have been sharing messages about mental health, urging folks to reach out if they’re struggling—’cause this hits too close.
It’s the kind of story that stops you cold. A kid with the world at his feet, grinding from college dreams to NFL starter, gone way too soon. Rest easy, Marshawn. The football world’s a little dimmer without you.
