Heartbreaking Loss: NASCAR Legend Greg Biffle and His Family Killed in Tragic Plane Crash
The racing world is in deep mourning after former NASCAR star Greg Biffle, his wife Cristina, and their two children were among seven people who lost their lives in a devastating private jet crash in North Carolina on December 18.
The small Cessna C550 business jet went down at Statesville Regional Airport, just north of Charlotte, shortly after takeoff. Reports indicate the plane departed around 10 a.m., but quickly turned back for an emergency landing attempt before crashing and bursting into flames. Authorities have confirmed there were no survivors.

On board were Greg Biffle, 55; his wife Cristina Grossu Biffle; their young son Ryder, 5; and Greg’s 14-year-old daughter Emma from a previous marriage. Also killed were family friends Dennis Dutton and his son Jack, along with Craig Wadsworth.
Cristina’s mother, Cathy Grossu, spoke to People magazine about the final moments, revealing her daughter had sent a desperate text from the plane: “We’re in trouble.” That was the last message before the tragedy unfolded.
“They were heading to Florida for a birthday trip—something fun for the family,” Cathy shared, her voice breaking with grief. “To lose them like this, on what was supposed to be a joyful getaway… it’s unimaginable. They lived life so fully, embracing every moment. They touched countless lives. I still can’t believe they’re gone.”

The family had been looking forward to the holidays, with their last conversation revolving around Christmas plans.
Greg Biffle was a true icon in NASCAR, racking up 19 Cup Series wins during his career, mostly with Roush Fenway Racing. He was named one of NASCAR’s 75 Greatest Drivers and remained active in the sport even after stepping back from full-time racing. But beyond the track, he was remembered for his incredible humanitarian work—flying helicopter missions to deliver supplies to remote areas devastated by Hurricane Helene last year.
NASCAR released a statement calling him “a beloved member of the community, a fierce competitor, and a friend to so many,” highlighting his passion, integrity, and lasting impact.
Our hearts go out to the families and everyone touched by this awful loss. Rest in peace.
